Reports – Newcastle Agree Loan Deal With £9m Purchase Option For Algerian International

There were some rumblings over the past few days that Newcastle were close to a mystery signing whose name the press hadn’t caught wind of.

That player could very well be former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb who Lee Ryder is reporting is on Tyneside to complete a medical.

The Chronicle have an exclusive that Bentaleb is on Tyneside to undergo a medical for a possible loan deal until the end of the season.

The Algerian international has not played for Schalke this season after falling out of favor with the club. He is currently training with their reserve side.

Nabil Bentaleb– returning to the Premier League with Newcastle?

Bentaleb is a 25-year-old central midfielder who signed for Schalke from Tottenham for £17m in 2017. He’s made 97 appearances for the club with 19 goals and 9 assists.

Get French Football News has added some further details about the possible loan move in that is includes a £9m option to buy.

This is an exciting and out of the blue signing if Newcastle can complete the move. Bentaleb did have a torn meniscus in his knee earlier this season that forced him to miss two months.

So hopefully that will not be a problem during his medical. Bentaleb has also reportedly turned down Crystal Palace in favor of Newcastle.

Does anyone know the background as to why he has been banished to the reserved for Schalke? If this lad can get back to even 70% of the quality he once showed then he will be better than anything we have in the Cm/cam position. At last someone who can carry the ball forward and pick a pass rather than static 70 yard balls to nobody.

From this Dennis Wise scouting report he looks like he has it all, pace, trickery, skill, passing, tackling and commitment.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwR_OSZHFOQ

He describes himself as a box-to-box midfielder, as that’s how Schalke wanted him to play.

Could be a good signing, this lad.

Match fitness may be an issue, I can’t remember what kind of player he was but if he can add goals or create chances he could do well for us.
Until he gets injured too :'(

Bentaleb isn’t an enforcer primarily. He’s a playmaker first and foremost, very good technically and understands how to build attacks, always looking to pass forward, will muck in defensively and has good mobility/physicality to hold his own in close quarters.

Odd signing, but can’t say I’m against it. Definite improvement on Sean Longstaff and good enough to take his place in the XI when he gets a chance.

Will keep Shelvey honest now he has a playmaker competitor because Ki lets face it is even less mobile and able to keep up with demands of tempo of PL football than Shelvey, probably why Bruce doesn’t think he is good enough.

Sell Ki and bring in Bentaleb. Good business.

Bentaleb is most like Cabaye of our recent midfielders if I had to make a comparison, albeit physically larger and stronger.

Here is one of his performances, every touch he had against Bayern. Get a good sense of his qualities.

    Good performance – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1JUR9XSug.

Decent ball carrier as well. A real all-rounder with a lot of talent. Just got to extract it from him.

Slightly longer video from Bentaleb’s earlier seasons here. Including a pretty good goal against us.

Seems to be able to shoot well with both feet.

Very interesting signing, this one. Reckon he could get Miggy and ASM motoring.

No idea of the cause of his breakdown with the manager at Schalke. Must have been bad to be banished for so long with seemingly no way back.

Cheers Hail, lets hope he comes in and hits the ground running, I can see him now playing those sliderule passes for St Max and Miggy to run onto……better than the hoof over the top or the 60-70 yard Hollywood pass….or at least different to those anyway, I still like to see the diagonal pass to a no rushing winger/wingback but they are easier to defend against IMHO

Hail- i think Bentaleb is more if a Tiote holding midfielder than an attacking midfielder. He said in an interview that he added attacking qualities late to his game.

If this is true I think it has the potential to be a great bit of business.

A little risky with injury and attitude, but in fairness to Bruce I think he has the man management skills to handle the attitude.

I have to say while ITK’s normally get a lot of stick on here full credit to Frank who seems to have got it spot on and was reporting this long before any of the media outlets. This is one of the reasons why I like reading this Blog!

On a reddit link from a Schalke fan last year :

Apparently according to the German paper the Bild this are the reasons:

On Friday Bentaleb said he can’t play against Leipzig because of an issue with his groin

    Saturday morning this was confirmed.

Stevens told the players who couldn’t play to still come to the game (assuming for team spirit). Bentaleb was a no show, while Harit showed up on crutches.

If bentaleb and Lazaro come in on loan we can still make more loan signings. The only limit is 2 domestic loans. No figure mentioned for loans from abroad.

That’s why at one point we had Kenedy, Slimani and Dubravka all on loan at the same time.

if both these deals come off that’s our loans used for the season, we now need cover on the left, is it not a risk using both our loans up before we have cover in place ???

The club are obviously in panic mode now. It’s just not normal for us to sign anyone so early in a window. Let’s he he doesn’t prove to be another moke.
Whilst I’m on WTF is happening with the Samatta transfer.

I think it’s a max of 4 loans at any one time and a max of 2 domestic loans. Weird how it all it works so can’t always remember it.

He looks ideally suited to our game, will tackle or take the ball off the player who has tackled, take a touch and look up to assess his options.

He likes to drive it up the field if there are no passes on, but can spray the ball long or short too.

In short, he’s gonna be excellent in transitioning from defence into a quick counter attack.

If he’s on loan, determined to win a permanent deal, he’ll be on his best behaviour. Once he’s in that routine, it might well become habit if we choose to take up the option to buy.

does this mean we still have one loan slot available, we would have used 3 with williams and the 2 new guys,

Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time. – The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.

Any comparison with our recent past midfielders is a forced one, be it Cabaye, Tiote or anybody else really. He really has got a bit of everything.

Look at that last piece of play in the clip I linked, very composed and classy on the ball. Good awareness of space, his surroundings. Definitely has a touch of class about him.

I guess so. Actually forgot about willems being on loan.

I remember looking into the rule book because at the time there was a lot of debate on here. The 2 at anytime I’m sure there’s a section where it relates to only being referred to as domestic loans.

That’s why in our first season we had kenedy, slimani and dubravka all at once. 2 domestic and 1 abroad.

So yeah, if these 2 new boys come in, we would be only allowed one more loan I think. But it could be a domestic loan tools we haven’t done that yet.

“there are restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

    They are:
    – Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
    – The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
    – Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
    – A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.

With the exception of Welsh clubs competing in the competitions listed under Rule V.6.2, loans from a club in membership of another National Association do not count towards the above quotas.”

    Wow. This is great

Came home with the wife from grocery shopping to see this

I don’t think he’s a world-beater but I do believe he’s now the best CM on the books. Great move by the club IMO

I will say this however— I think Hayden is a mainstay in out midfield. He’ll unfortunately be off this summer I think but for the rest of this season, it might be putting square pegs in round holes if our intention is to play Hayden and Bentaleb together. That said, if we’re missing Hayden at any time, will be great to see Shelvey or Matty (please no Sean!) ahead of him
