Alan Shearer has named his Team of the Week from this weekend’s Premier League action. As expected, Ciaran Clark is in the team. However, so are Federico Fernandez and Isaac Hayden.

This is the third time this season that Federico Fernandez has been picked by Alan Shearer. He was selected for the draw against Manchester City as well as the wins against Sheffield United.
It’s a first for both Ciaran Clark and Isaac Hayden this year. With Alan specifically mentioning Clark in his tweet after the Chelsea win, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the 30-year-old would make his Team of the Week.
Isaac Hayden also gets in after playing a significant part in the three points on Saturday. Not only did Isaac get the game-winner, but he played both in the midfield and then moved to right wing-back when Emil Krafth came off.
His versatility has been vital to Newcastle over the past few weeks as the team’s dealt with an extended injury crisis.
How Will Newcastle Do At Everton On Tuesday?

- Win (35%, 936 )
- Lose (30%, 790 )

Comment #41We had the same comments regarding ASM being a trouble maker aswell, I’ve not doubt bentaleb can be tough to manage at times but hopefully he’ll learn to mature after spending time out of limelight

Comment #43I must strongly disagree with the headline from a previous thread that states the signing of Bentaleb, Lazaro and Bowen would ensure an excellent transfer window.
By all means those three would be great additions but none of them are out and out strikers and our priority surely has to be to sign a proven consistent goal scorer.

We do need a goalscorer but if we create nothing of note then a goalscorer would be useless

Comment #46Our Toon……… By the same token if we create numerous chances with nobody to stick it in the net then it’s equally as pointless.

We dont know that will be the case as we havent done so previously, we’ve essentially got 3 attacking players who are still getting used to the league, maybe almiron being an exception now as he seems to have settled.
They need time, ings was on loan to southampton last season, hardly set the world on fire. He’s settled this season and is banging them in.

Yep very true mate, guess I’d like to see the front 3 settled and a team that’s able to retain possession before getting a much needed goalscorer

Comment #51Joelinton has received his criticism because of the chances he has missed.
That would suggest that we have created enough chances for a clinical finisher to have gotten close to 8-10 goals so far.
I’d argue a finisher would have a greater impact in our team than anything else right now. Yes a playmaker or winger would make us better, but with miggy and ASM fit then a CF would be a greater necessity.
Obvs we need strengthening in pretty much all areas apart from CB and keeper, I’m just talkin if priorities.

Recently you’ve presented yourself as being a herald of woe. Troubles follow you like crows right now, and ever the oftener the worse.
We just won two on the trot. Enjoy it.

Comment #53Joelinton has never been and will never be a prolific goalscorer, however getting a goalscorer right is arguably the hardest thing to do in football or find. Plenty of clubs have bought “proven goalscorers” only to find out they are duds.
Lukaku is classed as a proven goalscorer for example, however he converts 1 in every 6 chances, that’s not half chances but actual chances. In our team he’d be a dud!!

Comment #54Our Toon……… Danny Ings was a recognised goal scorer plighted by injury who always had the potential to become prolific.
Other than permacrock AC and Gayle who can’t hack it at PL level , we have nobody with a consistent scoring record.

Comment #55Not many people saw Ingsy doing what he’s currently doing. You would have said he was a decent PL striker. This season you could only describe him as lethal. Great player.

Comment #58If the resources are available test Bournemouth’s resolve with an offer for Cal Wilson. He’ll want out and they might want an early parachute payment. Two shots on target since October. And it ain’t his doing.

You see that’s a classic case case right there, wilson is a good goalscorer yet this season Bournemouth have struggled to create much. As such he last scored a goal for them in…….September

We create. We get into the opposition box when they’re not at full capacity. And we’re a threat from set pieces. With Almiron and ASM breaking we are a pretty dangerous counter attacking side. Joelinton offers something in that but not enough(so far)in my opinion. Choosing to relinquish possession differs from not creating.

Comment #64Our Toon………. I don’t think Ings set the world alight last year but he’d been out for a while and as you say he has now found his feet.
There is a striker out there who I’m sure could do a great job for us. I just can’t think of his name at the minute.

You see the chance Wilson missed at the weekend? Air shot ball went through his legs when all he needed to do was hit the target to score.
If he was here he’d have more than 1 league goal, maybe 4 at best, more chance of him being injured here though and out for the season

I’m not championing joelinton, as stated the lad has never been prolific and dont expect him to be here, he’s good as a no10 or out wide.
My personal preference is to build a team that can retain the ball and create chances, I’ve got alot of time for someone like buendia for example who’s at norwich and would defo add something here, maybe one for the summer.
I just dont think a goalscorer would thrive here just yet and the pressure to do so without the right supply will result in a wasted signing as fans will turn quickly.

Comment #70I’ll stick my heed out and say Almiron and ASM are the best two counter attacking players outside the top six. They have demonstrated limited abilities at times in final ball and finishing. But their ability to carry the ball from our half to the oppositions box at pace is incredible. And thoroughly exciting to watch.

retaining possession will take a lot of time to implement in this team. I think we all agree Rafa drilled that out as a club culture. Purely because of the limitations he had to work under before his girlfriend jail kicks off. Bruce needed quick wins to win over the discontented(myself and most of us). And he has been a success so far. If he had went for it there’s a good chance he’d have been mcclaren ii
Now next season we would be correct to call for improvement on this front if he had ever planned it
