Newcastle May Have Struck A Bargain For Pending Loan Signing

Keith Downie, with Sky Sports, has tweeted out some details of the pending loan deal for Schalke midfielder Nabil Bentaleb.

If these numbers are accurate, then this is an absolute bargain for the 25-year-old. If Bentaleb ends up not working out, then it’s cost Newcastle very little.

Schalke brought in Bentaleb for £17m just less than three years ago, so Newcastle could get the midfielder in for less than half that fee this summer.

There is some risk with the player’s reported disciplinary issues at Schalke that has seen him play just 2 reserve games all season. However, Steve Bruce is a very good man-manager, and we have a solid group of leaders in the squad.

Bentaleb will also be very motivated to get his career back on track. He’s very familiar with the Premier League, having come through the Tottenham Academy, so he’ll also count as homegrown.

One potential issue we see is the development of the Longstaff brothers. With Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden being Steve Bruce’s preferred midfield pairing, Sean and Matty haven’t seen as much time on the pitch as they need to develop. Adding Bentaleb to the mix will mean less game time for them.

Another issue could be if signing Bentaleb eliminates Miguel Almiron playing in a central role. The Paraguayan has thrived when playing through the midfield this season.

It seems his worst position is on the right, and with Allan Saint-Maximin back on the left and another midfielder in the squad, Miguel may be exiled to the right-wing for the rest of the season.

These are things that Steve Bruce will have to work through as this loan signing looks to be a certainty. Though, overall, we think Bentaleb is an astute addition to this squad.

A snip of a loan fee and if true, a snip of a final value for an experienced Premier league player, my only question is……why isn’t it done yet?

The Lazaro one could drag on though as his agent is still touting him all over the place

Bentaleb at that price does look like a bargain. Hopefully he can get match fit quick and we can see the best of him in a black n white shirt.

On today’s game I fear Calvert-Lewin. That kid is really good and seems to cause us all sorts of problems. Hoping he has an off day. If he’s not at it today I can see us clinching all 3 points.

I don’t see Bentaleb playing through the middle impacting Miggy too much. If Bentaleb runs it up through the centre of the pitch, it will leave space right and left for Miggy and ASM to exploit, if he plays it forward then Miggy can set off.

It will undoubtedly affect the Longstaffs, which is why I suggested yesterday Matty could go out on loan to a championship team for the rest of the season. Won’t do him any harm at all and he will probably get more match time then he has done so far with us.

JP…from The Rock – I agree about Calvert-Lewin he scored both their goals in our home loss against them and also Walcott always seems to have a good game against us especially in his Arsenal days.

When/if Bentaleb gets up to match fitness I think he will improve our midfield and supply our forwards with some inviting through balls for ASM, Miggy and Joe to race on to. What is worrying me though is he is a bit of a hot head and could jump into rash challenges around our box that could hurt us, or he could be easily sent off ala Mitrovic leaving us with 10 men.

Calvert-Lewin was up against a defence of ____Schar____Fernandez____Lejeune last time out. His physicality caused them problems. ___Fernandez___Lascelles___Clark should be better equipped to handle him.

A point at least tonight would be great, all 3 and we can really start looking up and considering ourselves in the fight for top 8.

I would keep matty. We will need all 5 of our central midfielders if we are to do some damage in the cups also one injury would leave us 1 cm as backup.

On Bowen. I would say 16 or 17 million plus add ons to reach 20 milllion should cover it. Nobody will pay them 23 million.

I saw a single Magpie this morning (not good) but within a short space of time I saw Two Magpies together (very good) so………. I’m predicting a 2 – 1 win tonight

    Just hope I’m right!

I recall a few years ago when I saw six magpies in a group and Newcastle won by six goals! Newcastle United 7 Leicester City 1

    Ah well dream on John!

I’m hoping we use all of Clark, lascelles, ritchie and ASM tonight. If fede needs a rest use schar. Hoping for a win but would take a draw now.

I must say I’ve always been and still am uncertain which of one or two magpies is good or bad. That’s probably because I’ve never taken the trouble to check the rhyme.

Anyway, onto Lazaro and Bowen. It seems that we’re fannying on over relative pennies – again.

Lazaro’s agent comes to SJP, speaks Charmless when he counted out his biscuit then Barnes who’d doubtless be trying to screw him over rather than negotiate a deal in good faith.

Now, it appears that Barnes thinks the price Hull want for Bowen doesn’t represent value for money as his contractor’s running down. Hull want £20m and Barnes offers £12m plus add ons. Again, the club doesn’t seem willing to try to broker a mutually acceptable deal. One thing’s for sure, if the lads as good as he’s cracked up to be, then another club’ll step in with a realistic bid. The market decides a player’s value – not a man who’s driven by profit at all costs!

Why should the names of Van Dijk, Pea and others come to mind?

There are variations on this but this is the one i was referring to…

    One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret,
    Never to be told.
    Eight for a wish,
    Nine for a kiss,
    Ten for a bird,
    You must not miss.[

Bentaleb had 46 appearances in Premier League for Spurs

    His stats are below

    0 goals

    3 assists

    Not exactly pulling up trees
