Who Did Our Readers Select As The Best Player At Everton?

We’re still coming down from the elation of Newcastle’s miraculous comeback against Everton on Tuesday. If Saturday’s win against Chelsea was a smash and grab, then the draw at Goodison Park was highway robbery.

However, we’ll take points any way we can get them. Even if it’s 93 minutes of pure frustration followed by 2 minutes of joy.

There weren’t many great or even good performances in the game. Though many players seemed to be suffering from fatigue which is where Steve Bruce laid most of the blame for the disappointing display.

Well, that and the fact that the team was still missing some critical players. It was evident in the players that were on the bench, which had four defenders as well as two youngsters.

But this is what this team is at the moment, and you can’t help but pull for them. It’s not great to watch, but they have something about them that they are rarely out of games.

The poll for this match reflects the way the game unfolded. It was all about the final couple of minutes. In that time, Florian Lejeune scored his first two goals for Newcastle to claim the unlikeliest of points.

Of the 2613 votes, Lejeune collected 1662 for 64% to easily win his first best player poll this season. Martin Dubravka came in a distant second with 17% of the vote.

However, without Martin’s contribution in the first 90 minutes, Newcastle would have had no chance of getting this glorious point. But this game was all about what Florian did in the Everton box in the final minutes.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In 2-2 Draw At Everton?

  • Florian Lejeune (64%, 1,662 )
  • Martin Dubravka (17%, 433 )
  • Miguel Almiron (11%, 296 )
  • Matt Ritchie (3%, 67 )
  • Federico Fernandez (1%, 24 )
  • Fabian Schar (1%, 18 )
  • Isaac Hayden (1%, 18 )
  • Ciaran Clark (1%, 17 )
  • Jamaal Lascelles (1%, 16 )
  • Joelinton (1%, 16 )
  • Matty Longstaff (1%, 16 )
  • Sean Longstaff (0%, 11 )
  • Emil Krafth (0%, 11 )
  • Christian Atsu (0%, 8 )

I remember Lascelles saying that Rafa would give them a video file on the opposition and individual players and that it was up to them to suggest solutions, which were discussed in tactics meetings.

    droppy,
Reading back through the posts from last night. Someone disagreeing with you is not being a keyboard warrior. I didn’t say you weren’t allowed to comment, so why point out that you’re allowed to comment. Also someone disagreeing with you is not dragging you in to petty nonsense, it’s a blog ffs and people disagree with each other, no need to spit your dummy out because of it. What was all that about not having to justify your comments, you don’t have to do anything. If you comment and someone questions it then it’s up to you whether or not you reply, I didn’t insult you I simply disagreed with what you said. As I said, it’s a blog, if you don’t like people disagreeing with you maybe you’re in the wrong place.

Good point made about lejeune and the rest of team not celebrating , nor did they rush to get the ball to get the game going as quickly as possible – guess they thought as I and many on here did that it was a consolation goal – luckily we actually pressed and Everton looked like they were back in the changing room hence great celebrations from team and fans when we got 2nd … All the better with Pickford antics – to be honest we had no fight for 91 minutes but came to life after goal.
Not sure how BBC said 2 shots on target , we had about 4 shots on target during 2nd goal scramble

Think it’s fair to say Rafa was a better tactician than Bruce who in his defence has never said he was a great tactically – anyway who cares about Bruce – not my choice and he probably won’t be here in a couple of seasons and the team will ( in whatever league ), Bruce gets paid very well and he’ll end up getting a large bonus if he keeps us up and an even bigger one if he manages to get top half.
I don’t know why people think we need to pay him on back non stop or slag him off endlessly – our football is definitely a bit crap at the minute and I don’t think that’s totally down to injuries ..but we do have 30 points and are looking on track for safety – maybe Bruce and the players will open up and play more attacking football once we’re safe.

Bruce out achieved his capabilities so far
He’s had a lot to contend with
Universally not wanted from day one
Most are now willing to give him a shot now after seeing th work and effort he’s put in
And he has always showed us fans the utmost respect

#BoycottAshley ( OP) @77 – I don’t read every post but I haven’t seen one where people are trying to take any credit away from Rafa. I think most of us (myself included) are just expressing surprise and praise that Bruce has managed to continue and build on the good work and solid base that Rafa created. In fact Bruce himself has said that the players “are used to playing a certain way” and so he continues in that style.

    martoon,
I don’t think he has built on anything, he’s got them playing for him which is a massive plus, but apart from the obvious points tally, what has he actually added. We’ve conceded more, scored less, less possession and imo the football is even worse. So what is it you think he has built.

    He continues in that style.
He has no choice as he can’t change with the players he has.

Leguene. Good player with lots of plus points.
Slow, would get found out in a back four.

Schar. Similar. Suited to right sided CB in a three.
Not so suited to out and out CB or out and out FB.

My view. Any team needs to decide how it wants to play.
    The formation, tactics etc.
Over three or four years recruit to that set up.
    We don’t and have not.

I remember Bob Paisley saying more than a few times.
Great player, but not a Liverpool player.

Jail – when I say ‘built on’ that doesn’t necessarily mean improve. Bruce is using the solid foundations of the defence that Rafa built and the team spirit. I wouldn’t say they are any worse but the football we play at the moment is definitely worse however our points total is much better – make of that what you will?

We have to assume that Fabian Schar is off, surely he’d have been offered a new deal by now same with Fed. That leaves three CB’s not including Dummet, does that then pave the way for a 4-4-2

Are they also going to let Clark go in to his last year, Yedlin too. Manqillo is definitely off. So the team Bruce has inherited might have no choice other than being dismantled.

    Jail, what has Bruce built?

    Same stage of the season…

Bruce – Fewer goals scored – more goals -conceded – more points.

Rafa – More goals scored , less goals conceded, less points..

Now I don’t know your thoughts about football…

But mine are that points win prizes and get you higher up the league.

What is better – to lose two games 5-0 and win three 1-0 = 9pts 10 conceded, 3 scored.

Or lose four games 1-0 and win one 5-0 = 3pts 4 conceded, 5 scored.

According to you Jail the second set of results are better.

    Go figure.

I think people look to much into tactics and opposition and how to counter them and make football more complicated than it is.

Keegan wasn’t a great tactician, just set out his style and made players feel 12ft tall.

Liverpool dont really change tactics Klopp has a style of play, has recruited players to fit it and sends them out to play regardless of opposition.

Its about setting out your philosophy and getting players that fit it

My own view is that Benitez is tactically superior to Bruce but much poorer at man management.

Bruce is benefiting from tactics and formation that evolved under Benitez and deserves credit for doing so as so many managers very often arrogantly dismiss their predecessors efforts and try to reinvent new tactics and formations very often with the same players which very often fails, e.g. square pegs and round holes.

Looking from the outside and from what professional pundits have said is that players warm to Steve Bruce’s character in the same way that players did with Sir Bobby and unlike what players did to Rafa Benitez if we are to believe comments previously made by Stephen Gerrard.

Others have mentioned it and I believe it too that the teams tactics and formation will change over time and become more attack minded than they currently are, which they can’t get any worse, surely not.

We now have Unused Substitute saying Bentaleb had no choice but to come here. Ie let’s take the positives of good work by Nickson and Bruce away. I’ll wager that if we signed a donkey people would be hanging Bruce. It’s just as well he has a few points or thus blog wud have the man hung drawn and quartered. For what it’s worth Im still quite concerned re relegation as the league has better teams this year. If we start to tumble, the blog could get seriously ugly. It’s bad enough when we are mid table.

He did arrogantly dismiss his predecessors tactics as negative, tried to change it and got spanked, blamed the players for not having the quality to play how he wanted before going back to his predecessors tactics saying that’s the only way they know how to play.

Who knows. Although I do think something is going on.
The club is set up for change. Hopefully new owners, who can do what they want.
Getting players out is often harder than getting players in.

6 or so have deals ending this June.
Even more have deals ending summer 2021. Only those perceived to have a big transfer value have longer deals. Dubs, Almo, ASM etc.

If Bruce keeps us up that is a minimum of 4 years in the Prem.
Revenue at 175M, wage bill by my calculations of 60 -70M.
He’s putting together a cash pile.

What for. New owners to spend ?
    Ashley to spend ?
Take less for the club and keep the cash pile ?
Siphon off the cash pile ?

    I don’t know.
    Everything seems to be temporary.
    Temporary to what ?
We can only hope it’s something good.

And despite your guff about style of play etc, you defended the other nights performance on Everton having better players. The exact same situation that you slated the former manager. Two very poor games of football. One was excusable because the opposition had much better players but the other one was down to the managers awful muck tactics. Go figure.
