Bruce Ready To Move On After ‘Tired And Jaded’ Display

Steve Bruce spoke after the 0-0 draw against Norwich City at St James Park this afternoon. It was another poor performance in which Martin Dubravka and the defense kept the team in the game.

However, there were no late-game heroics this time out. In fact, the lads didn’t even create a chance in the final stretch, as Norwich pressed for a winner.

It’s a clean sheet, and we’ve only conceded five goals in the last seven games in all competitions. However, we’ve looked anemic in attack other than the 4-1 win against Rochdale at St James Park.

The point moves Newcastle up four places into the top half of the table for the time being. We did see two debuts with Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose coming on in the second half. Other than those small positives, it was an otherwise miserable afternoon.

Steve Bruce said as much after the match as he conceded that the lads did not play very well. This is what he said after the match about the performance on the club’s Twitter account:

“I think it’s important, when you play so poorly, that you don’t get beat. That’s the only positive along with the introduction of the three new lads who will certainly help us.”

Bruce went on to state the obvious about the woeful attacking display this afternoon. This is what he had to say about the lack of creativity going forward:

“From the off, especially in forward areas, we looked tired and jaded. Overall, you take it, you move on and get ready for Tuesday.

“We must offer more on the counter attack and I think that’s been missing in the last couple of weeks in particular.”

We have to be better on Tuesday at Oxford or we’ll be out before the Fifth Round of the FA Cup once again. Bruce will have few options going forward as it’s likely to be too early for Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto with Gayle still unavailable well into this month.

Newcastle have just been so stale in the final third that Bruce may have to think about tweaking the system again. He was asked about the formation, but doesn’t seem too keen on messing around with it at the moment:

“It’s something which eventually I will do. I’ve changed us three times this year and we’ve been badly beaten so it’s that balance.

“I think they’re comfortable with the way we play, certainly defensively, but we’ve got to offer more up the pitch.”

We hope to see a far better display on Tuesday at the Kassam Stadium. However, if we don’t sort out the lack of goals it could be another early FA Cup exit.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In Draw Against Norwich?

  • Martin Dubravka (70%, 1,162 )
  • A. Saint-Maxmin (9%, 142 )

  • Nabil Bentaleb (2%, 29 )
  • Ciaran Clark (2%, 28 )
  • Matt Ritchie (1%, 22 )
  • Jamaal Lascelles (1%, 14 )
  • Valentino Lazaro (1%, 12 )
  • Danny Rose (1%, 12 )
  • Sean Longstaff (1%, 10 )

Bruce is using this formation as his get out excuse for playing crap footy. It has nothing to do with formation, just coaching ability to put a team out with a clear plan of attack and how they will transition from defence into attack.

Like iv said today, Wolves and Sheff United play 3 at the back and are good to watch -Sheff Utd with a team player for player poorer than our squad.

We have 3 CBs too but our setup is 5 at the back, there is no fluid system of how to keep the wingbacks high and press from the front, no overlapping CBs heaven forbid like Sheff United do.

The formation isnt an excuse not to be able to pass the ball, not an excuse not to be able to offer some tactical knowledge of how to use our formation to be able to break teams down. Pass and move? Never heard of it apparently because the players couldnt possible handle it sorry.

Tactics make a team’s style of play, not the formation.

There is nothing in Bruce’s CV to suggest he can take a 343/532 and turn it into an effective style of football. He was a dinosaur of a manager in the 00’s, the game has evolved dramatically since then. He hasnt.

Near full house, wtf, outplayed, outfought, Norwich superior in every department, we are riding our luck massively, worst footballing team in the division, ten behind the ball again against the bottom club, shameful.

Well rafa won champions league, la liga ,cups playing with his formation his style .
What has Bruce evef done as a manager .
He has no style of play .
He should be counting his lucky star he took over from rafa who had the players drilled in defense and not pardew or mc Claren or we would have no points on the table .

There is very little to no goal threat as we have no Rondon and Perez in our squad, we’re relying on a poor Joelinton who is getting very little to no service. Total lack of quality in our team.
    We can’t break our mold.

Munster Mag must be choosing his words very carefully this evening. In a very similarly drab 0-0 against Fulham last season the Moanster man never held back in a scathing attack on five at the back, the mighty Fulham and the unacceptability of a defensive display. He was very much the de facto leader of the blog meltdown crew.

Asi Fish of course there is no better feeling than the Toon either winning or playing well and entertaining it’s audience. Of course there has been dark times in recent Toon history however sadly we are being dragged back to the dark ages under MA despite the TV money on offer in premier league.

Sadly paddling pools, wheelie bins and premier league survival isn’t what schar willems miggy st max etc want and will be looking for ambition elsewhere. It won’t even need a Real or barca to take them away it could easily be wolves Leicester (teams we were streets ahead of at MA becoming our owner)

Agreed Bruce is no Rafa but you can hardly compare our squad to champions league contenders.
Bruce still isn’t happy with what he’s witnessing.
If Rafa hadn’t Rondon and Perez last season we would have struggled also.

Clever Dick “Ashley” comes up with a player that is not of the same calibre as the guy who was gutted not to continue as a Toon player!…. just think we could have saved £30m and kept a decent No 9!

Toon kk ..bruce should stop then talking about the style of play for the last 2 or 3 years ,my point is he has no style that’s why he was at his level in a mid championship club .
Rafa would eventually if backed won us something we had hope now we have nothing under a nothing manager.
Toon kk what has Bruce ever achieved as a manager ?

MagpieRanger at 22. A very likely scenario should MA bugger this takeover sale with the Crown Prince amanda and reuben brothers. If he can’t sell to these with very deep pockets then I assume he’s here til he leaves in a wooden box.

Another 30 or 40 years of this s**t show to look forward to then. There would still be those saying poor mikey with all these tyre kickers wasting his time making out he’s the innocent party
