Well, that was not a pretty match for Newcastle fans. The Magpies were outplayed at St James Park by Norwich City, who are in the basement of the Premier League.
We would like to say that was two points lost, but we really didn’t deserve much out of the match and are lucky Teemu Pukki is not in his early-season form.
The visitors had the better chances while edging the possession. Our defenders were solid, and once again, Martin Dubravka made a few crucial stops.
However, the lads are entirely devoid of creativity going forward, and the few chances that fell their way were not taken.
Despite the lack of service, Joelinton played well and had Newcastle’s best chance with a first-half header that Tim Krul did well to save. Those moments were few and far between.
Our set-pieces were lacking as we had a couple of free-kicks just outside the box that were wasted. We hope that as Valentino Lazaro gets more time on the pitch, he is allowed to take some of the set-pieces.
One of the biggest disappointments is that it was all Norwich for the final ten minutes of the game. Newcastle just held on for a disappointing draw.
We’ve moved into 10th place on 31 points, but that will change after Arsenal travel to Burnley tomorrow as they are both on 30 points with a better goal difference.
Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In Draw Against Norwich?
- Martin Dubravka (70%, 1,162 )
- A. Saint-Maxmin (9%, 142 )
- Federico Fernandez (5%, 87 )
- Joelinton (5%, 82 )
- Miguel Almiron (3%, 53 )
- Nabil Bentaleb (2%, 29 )
- Ciaran Clark (2%, 28 )
- Matt Ritchie (1%, 22 )
- Jamaal Lascelles (1%, 14 )
- Valentino Lazaro (1%, 12 )
- Danny Rose (1%, 12 )
- Sean Longstaff (1%, 10 )
- Isaac Hayden (1%, 9 )
- DeAndre Yedlin (0%, 7 )

Comment #5Bruce needs help getting more out of these players. I refuse to believe they are as bad as this.
Well, as the owner will no doubt see nothing wrong, we are stuck with this limp, no crawl, towards safety. Let the mediocre times roll!

Comment #7In fact the football doesn’t merit the label of “mediocre”.

Comment #8We head back to the NE in less than 3 weeks and whilst we will miss the climate and quiet it will be good to have shops, restaurants, wifi etc…
The game was on BFBS and was not our best but we still got a point.
We will never be a top team under MA and relegation is always a threat but after watching today I can’t wait to go to SJP.
Hate all you want but this is your team and for some of us MA will probably outlast us.
Joelinton had a good game by the way but seeing as he didn’t score I’m sure people will jump on him.
No one listens, having spag Bol for tea, check for Asi on the shirt if ya want to join me for a pint

Comment #10We need a Marveuax/Ben Arfa type player (a playmaker with a brain). Joelinton did some good touches today. Can’t play up front on his own though. I would start Muto up front in every game from now. Give him a chance.

Comment #11Bruce played negative football but it was never this bad…I’m sure we’ll scrape over the line of 40 points but does anyone else in the prem league and Sky other than toon fans want us to – worst team to watch by a country mile..
Unsurprisingly Dubs motm yet again

Comment #12Dubz by a country mile. If we had some other butter fingered goalkeeper we’d be sat bottom by now. Yes he made the odd mistake but which keeper hasn’t. Some of the saves he’s pulled off this season have been absolutely monolithic.
Keep up the good work marra

Comment #15Bruce, Clemence, Agnew…….what is it from them that lead us to expect they can coach a progressive, attacking, cohesive style into the players at the club?
Where have they done this previously? Or do we think that tomorrow they will wake up and all of a sudden change the way they have worked for the past 10-15 years? Its actually nuts to expect different results from them that would counter their own history with no basis for a change.
How many matches have we heard “didnt play well, done well, need a little bit more quality in attacking areas, didnt pass the ball well”? Its been around 8 months of training, where is the improvement?

Comment #17The trouble is that Jo Linton just isn’t a striker, for some reason the club is trying to turn him into one which unsurprisingly is failing

but it will be the same for sorenson, or anyone.
without a change in tactics and style, we will continue to offer little in attack, create few chances and have to rely on Dubs to keep us in games. Changing the 1 CF for another wont change much, if anything, as he wont be in the game.

Yeah, it’s going a painful and nervy run-in alright.
The grinding slog to 40 points. 19th richest club in the world. I’d liken this club to filling a formula one car with diesel and sticking a chimp behind the wheel. Could, and should, be so much better ran.

Not only is he not a CF, but we have him in as one and leave him isolated, working off scraps and having maybe 2 half/chances per game so he feels the pressure with every shot as he may not get another one all game.
Who knows, with confidence and a team set up to create for him, maybe Joelinton could become a Prem CF. But you have to give him every opportunity to succeed, seems we set up to make sure he doesnt.

Comment #32You’ve got to assume the players themselves are unhappy with this style, or lack of. Let’s hope they don’t starting playing to get Bruce the sack, though I don’t know how you’d be able to tell the difference.
Scrape together another nine points and deal with this anti-football approach in the summer by bringing in a new manager.

Comment #37Nah, he struggled at Carlisle. Must be useless. Give Muto the chance. Gayle and Carroll are always injured. Carroll hasn’t even scored for us yet. He should drop down a division. At least Muto has a bit of pace. We need a midfielder who can run forward with the ball.
