Bentaleb, Darlow, And The Longstaff Brothers All Start At Oxford

Here is the starting lineup Steve Bruce has selected for the FA Cup replay against Oxford. It has five changes from the draw against Norwich.

This is a strong team Bruce has put out as he continues to take this competition seriously.

It looks like he’s going with a 3-5-2 with Joelinton and Miguel Almiron up top and a three-man midfield of Nabil Bentaleb and the Longstaff brothers.

Allan Saint-Maximin only makes the substitutes bench but is there if needed for a second-half push which we hope will not be the case.

It’s good to see that Tom Allan has made the bench. Hopefully, the way this match unfolds allows him to get his second appearance for Newcastle.

This is the team that Oxford manager Karl Robinson has picked.

The lads really need to show a reaction this evening. This is a chance to advance to the fifth round against West Brom and put the last few performances behind us.

Howay The Lads!

    Hopefully

    __________Schar_____Lascelles_____Lejeune
    ____________________Sean
    Yedlin__________Matty____Bentaleb__________Ritchie
    ___________Joleinton________Almiron

Hopefully it’s Bentleb and Matty who are allowed most freedom of the midfield 3, but I have a feeling Bentaleb is going to be underutilised and he’ll be the one sitting.

Who are we kidding. Five at the back against Oxford, only really two attacking players, setting up to play defensive again. This was Bruce’s chance to change the tactics, the formation, even start Allan after his assist but no the same old defend, hoof and pray method you love to see it

Bentaleb has been a snoozefest since joining the club—completely anonymous for the majority of games.

Bentaleb has had a few nice touches here & there, but his positional sense looks poor. Hopefully he is just rusty and the best is yet to come, because I don’t recall him being any great shakes at Tottenham when I watched him play.

Bentaleb performance a must? Honeymoon period? Lay off the drugs. If anybody is under pressure for a performance it’s Sean Longstaff.

Bentaleb has been one of our better performers in the last couple of poor results, whilst finding his match fitness too. Not put a foot wrong and done what has been asked of him.

An opportunity to try and play attacking football lost

The team looks jaded and the bench is very poor – if we win it will be 1-0 cant see us getting more than that!

I suspected matty and Almiron either side of Joe, but maybe not after reading this from Bruce :
“We’ve changed [formation] slightly a bit today. I hope it bears fruit. It’s difficult for our forward players, the way we play. We have to keep plugging away.

I think you guys are being a little rough on Bentaleb, last match he was very calm on the ball and didn’t put a foot wrong as far as I could see. If his positional play is off, talk to Bruce, he is manager. Remember Willems first game? He didn’t even know what position he was supposed to be playing.

I knew HWA would be triggered by any criticism of Bentaleb. People invest themselves far too much into their own prophecies.

It’s too early to know either way with Bentaleb, but it’s a poor start, as c-dog alluded to.

Bruce has been throwing a few red herrings out in the build up to this match, including the comment about not been willing to play two up top.

Expect the shape will be as I posted above.

Surely (pleeeeease) SB has picked no goalscorer again because he’s saving them to be fit for Arsenal and remainder?

0-0 : Oxford best defence in division, NUFC goal-less ad infinitum (seems like)

It’ll be interesting to see how the lads respond to Brucie’s bit of motivational man management . Telling them they’re not technically capable of taking the game to Norwich could well inspire some of them to cross the half way line during an attack.

Hope bruceys playing a 3 5 2 with almiron and Joe up top but doubt it. Players hopefully realise they’ve got a point to prove after last couple of stinkers and get after them. 3-0 toon (optimistically). Hwtl.

Nah, not a poor start. Two 6/10 performances. Not given the ball away once, takes it under pressure, 1 or 2 smart forward passes and plenty of mobility all while playing his first competitive football for quite a while.

    Essex

I agree, it’s sad to see. Get the sense some want him to fail for whatever warped reason.

Spot on Essex. Well let’s face it. Charnley signed Bentaleb. Charnley is crap. Ergo Bentaleb is crap. I’m fearing a low scoring defeat tonight. Not sure if it’s worth logging on afterwards, it’s will be a war zone. Enjoy the Beeb fellas.

Bentalab has played okay if not spectacularly, don’t think he’s meant to be a creative midfielder though so not sure why people are expecting mazy runs from him – he’s been neat although I think he wants to get forward a bit more – didn’t look happy in last 30 mins against Norwich

Bentaleb is a decent player, many Spuds fans were sad to see him leave. Agree that while he hasn’t been spectacular he has been solid and did what has been asked of him. Give him time to understand our tactics (no sarcasm intended) and given time he will shine. For people to be on his case this early in his NUFC career is pretty poor, after all how long was Almiron afforded before he came good?

#nufc arrive seven games unbeaten (although five are draws). It’s their longest run without defeat since 2017 – immediately after they lost 3-0 to #oufc in the FA Cup.
