Sean Longstaff had by far his best performance of the season last night at Oxford. That is very encouraging because we also saw an improved display when he came on against Norwich on Saturday.
It’s been a struggle all season long for Sean who has not hit the heights of last season when he broke into the Newcastle first team. Last night, the young midfielder was outstanding, and hopefully, this performance will see him kick on for the rest of the campaign.
Bruce had the 22-year-old playing in a more advanced role, and the freedom really seemed to suit Sean. The Chronicle have published the following comments from Steve Bruce about Sean’s performance last night.
“He had a serious knee injury towards the back end of last season. People tend to forget that. He’ll learn how to cope with that.
“Today we gave him a bit of freedom and gave me food for thought because we know he can score a goal. We’ve seen that in training enough.
“We gave him that little bit of freedom, and I think he enjoyed it and he put in his best performance of the season by a million miles.”
Sean needs to follow up this performance by showing some consistency moving forward. He’s a much better player than he’s shown so far this season.
Maybe playing in a more advanced role is where Bruce can get the best out of the young Geordie.

Comment #42Ahh JIB – Ashley’s porridge swallowing supporter. Always on hand to put everyone down and accept mediocrity. Ashley has 40,000 of your type in the ground and is as happy as he can be !

It’s when the Zombies start appearing on the streets of Sunderland that I’ll start to worry, although I’m not sure how we’d know!

It’s the fans that will get rid of Ashley
He got a shock in the summer when 10 thousand refused to renew their tickets
What do you think he will happen when 15 thousand or more refuse this summer
