‘The Fans Give Me Everything’ – Tuesday’s Hero Salutes The Traveling Support

It looked destined for penalties on Tuesday night until Christian Atsu played a pass to Allan Saint-Maximin on the left wing. The Frenchman did the rest as he cut inside and skipped past three Oxford defenders before unleashing a blazing bolt into the top corner.

Allan immediately ran to the away section filled with Newcastle fans who were in a frenzy of joy. Our talisman had saved our FA Cup fate with a moment of brilliance.

Saint-Maximin spoke after the match and was very appreciative of not only his teammates but the away support.

Matthew Raisbeck, with BBC Newcastle has tweeted some of those comments Allan made after his dramatic winner.

Allan has a special relationship with the Newcastle fans, and it’s great that he seems to really click with this fanbase.

This was an important game in more ways than one. First, the win gets Newcastle to the final sixteen of the FA Cup for the first time since 2006 when we reached the final eight.

It also gives Bruce and the lads a bit of a reprieve from the poor performances over the last couple of weeks. While they made it hard on themselves, they ultimately got the job done on Tuesday night.

Who Was The Man Of The Match In Win At Oxford?

  • Sean Longstaff (32%, 854 )
  • A. Saint-Maximin (31%, 822 )
  • Jamaal Lascelles (14%, 373 )
  • Miguel Almiron (10%, 274 )
  • Nabil Bentaleb (4%, 95 )
  • Joelinton (3%, 78 )
  • Matty Longstaff (3%, 69 )
  • Karl Darlow (1%, 29 )
  • Matt Ritchie (1%, 16 )
  • DeAndre Yedlin (1%, 14 )
  • Ciaran Clark (0%, 9 )
  • Christian Atsu (0%, 9 )
  • Florian Lejeune (0%, 6 )
  • Isaac Hayden (0%, 5 )
  • Fabian Schar (0%, 4 )

So hopefully just a little afternoon recovery session for the lads tomorrow, and then let them have a full 6 days off, and then back at it with fresh minds and bodies and close to a fully fit group the next Wednesday morning in preparation for the Arsenal on the weekend. Very happy to get these difficult past two behind us, and on balance you’d have to say we’ve done ok. Howay the Lads!

So we find ourselves in the 5th round of the cup for the first time in 13 years. Tonights game was a real banana skin but we did enough to scrape through. I know plenty of Oxford fans really fancied their chances, and were basically saying we were shite .
Time to try and get some injuries sorted before our next game v Arsenal.

Got home from work and watched the game on replay ESPN+.

Yes first half we looked dominant, nice to see Joe get a goal but on replay scuffed it a little but a goal is a goal.

Second half, well let’s be honest there shouldn’t have been any second half for Oxford, as soon as the weeeee fellla got pissed off I knew he would do something stupid and give away a free kick in a bad area.

The second goal for Oxford, west ham have a serious looking striker with this kid.

Overall, we were lucky as shite, yes great goal from Max, but we ain’t going to win this cup with that type of performance.

Was that game worth the admission fee?

You bet. Cracking cup tie. Dominated up to 78% in the first 30+, demonstrating that we CAN hold the ball! Shocking, I know.

But, we are Newcastle. Instinct or taking our foot off the throttle led to two excellent goals. Dubravka would’ve saved those, said some. Bxxxxxxxs. Darlow had a good game, give the lad credit.

Anyway, Oxford deserved their moment. But, quality shown through. ASM was having his worst game for us when he came up with that. Unstoppable. In any league.

Lots of positives. We can play on the front foot!! Joelington had a very good game. Almiron, MOM, was a constant thorn. Atsu played well. Sean, a bit forward is a good idea and did well. Still, he lost the ball a few times for delaying. He’ll learn. Bentaleb needs to get match fit but showed flashes.

And, we won! Fifth round. First time in over a decade.

First half was canny, some positive stuff with 2 decent goals.

Once Joe went off we were clueless, didn’t seem to know who was playing up front, hardly anyone getting into the box.

We looked like we were going through the motions in the second half and Oxford deserved to draw level.

ET was squeaky bum time but we weathered the storm, got the winner and now we get to visit the mighty WBA.

The first half was the bare minimum we should see.

Disappointed with the show after Joe went off, Bruce didn’t react to the obvious problem on the pitch, could’ve easily finished differently.

Good cup match for the neutral, should’ve made it much easier for ourselves, still loads of work to do on tactics and set up.

Surprised Bentaleb isn’t getting more credit.

He played some exquisite forward passes under pressure the likes of which none of our CM’s can do.

This guy is going to make a massive difference once his is match fit.

I can see us winning the FA cup this year, it would be typical NUFC.

Had some cracking managers had some cracking sides and some world class players and have been within touching distance a few times.

The irony to win it this year with the unrest how the team is playing would be unbelievable.

Yer I can see it happening, can’t wait for the final.

    On luck…

Oxford were lucky Sean missed a sitter just after they got their first goal.

In a match of five cracking goals that was the easiest chance of the night.

We’ve struggled and needed replays against both the league 1 teams who aren’t even in the playoff places , we travel to top of the championship west brom – whole Shearer sounded very confident last night , based on the Oxford and Rochdale games which we played well in 45 minutes of each out of 390 minutes of football – west brom will be a lot tougher unless they out a severely weakened team out – anyway talk if winning cup is very premature based on performance/ results do far against league 1

Delighted with the result but frustrated at the performance. When we were dominating leading 2 0 we played nice stuff to the edge of their box but instead of a ball in the box we’d play backwards all the way to our keeper. I know we were trying to retain procession but a 3rd goal would have killed the game. The substitution of Miggy for Hayden was far too negative – I know we were trying to close the game out but it left us no out ball and we were pinned back. It took Bruce until half way through extra time to realise this and bring on Atsu which gave ASM some much needed assistance! However a great goal by ASM – he’s been threatening to do that all season.

I welcomed the three man midfield, long overdue. It made a big difference. Sean looked more comfortable and more effective in the advanced role.

I thought Lejeune looked out of sorts. He has been for the last few games. He doesn’t seem to have much pace and his reading of the game looks suspect. Clark made a big difference and should continue as first choice.

I thought Bendaleg was good. Calm on the ball, nothing fancy although the drag back lifted the crowd. He will get better as he gets fully fit and fully integrated into the team and should provide protection for Sean.

All three forwards played well. It was only a matter of time before one of ASM’s thunderbolts hit the back of the net. Atsu deserves praise as he brought the team to life and linked up well with the others.

I don’t know why pardew and rafa wouldn’t pick strong cup teams. Credit to Bruce for having the balls to do it when the others didn’t. A cup run is exciting for all us fans.

    Quite surprised at you Martoon
Not so much at West Lancs as he’s a Bruce hater
We brought on Hayden our best utility defender for
a limping Miggy in the 90th minute while leading 2 -1.
Wtf is there to find in that to criticise Bruce for ?

You can curse our bad luck at conceding in the last seconds
of 4 minutes injury time by all means but to find fault with Bruce
    is just silly.

Well done to the lads for pulling the win off, had me feeling doubtful for a while during the game, good tactics by Bruce bringing Atsu on thought he gave us the boost we needed.
Think West Brom will be a tough game, but at least we have a chance.
