Newcastle cruised in the first half tonight at Oxford United, with two excellent goals from Sean Longstaff, and Joelinton put us 2-0 up at the half.
It was good to see both players get on the score sheet.
While Oxford threatened Newcastle still seemed comfortable until the 84th minute when Kelly scored a great goal direct from a free-kick.
2-1.
Then a full four minutes into stoppage time it was Holland who volleyed home for an excellent goal – to take the game into extra time.
And after 116 minutes, when the tie seemed to be going to penalties, it was an absolutely magnificent solo goal from Allan Saint-Maximin that won it for the Magpies.
And we are through to round 5 of the FA Cup for the first time since back in 2006. We play at West Brom.
Mike Ashley was at the game tonight to see Newcastle advance.
Brilliant Saint-Maximin goal wins it for the Magpies
This is what a relieved Steve Bruce said after the game as reported in the Chronicle:
“I didn’t think we were in any danger at all, and all of a sudden they’ve scored from a great free-kick and a wonderful volley and then it’s game on.”
“Fair play to the players, they stuck at it and we won it with a wonder goal, which was good to see.”
“Sean, I was delighted with him. He looked a threat all evening. As I said, we’ve needed a wonder goal from Allan to finish it.”
“Sean had a serious knee injury towards the back end of last season. People tend to forget that – he’ll learn how to cope with that.”
“Today we gave him a bit of freedom and gave me food for thought because we know he can score a goal.”
“We’ve seen that in training enough. We gave him that little bit of freedom and I think he enjoyed it and he put in his best performance of the season by a million miles.”
“Overall we have deserved it. Until the last ten minutes, my goalkeeper hasn’t had much to do.”
“When the second goal for Oxford goes in you think ‘This is the FA Cup’ but thankfully we found a little bit more.”
“That’s twice we made hard work of it.”
“We’ve had two replays against Rochdale and Oxford – no disrespect – so we’ve made hard work of it but I think the team deserves to be in the fifth round.”
“Let’s see how we do at West Brom.”
“I’m sure Mike Ashley will go home delighted. It’s the first time in his era we’ve got past the fourth round, which I’m sure he’ll be delighted about.”
“We need the break. We’ve struggled of late. I’m playing two wide players through the middle. “
“We’ve struggled in terms of injuries. They deserve the break.

Comment #2We dont need a goalscorer when will ppl realise that. It’s how we are set up! Bruce may not be the best but hes no mug either and theres a reason he went all out on trying to sign a CM rather than a striker because its the way we play and not our forwards.

Comment #9I thought Martin Keown was a decent co-commentator tonight, dealt sensitively with a number of NUFC issues, contracts, Ashley, lack of investment etc, and was very knowledgeable about Oxford United too.

Comment #11I don’t usually like Keown, but yes he loved Sean, raved a bit about. And was very good annalist. For a change

Comment #13From the BBC match report
“Newcastle’s Joelinton both scored and assisted in the same game for the first time since January 2019 for Hoffenheim against Freiburg in the Bundesliga.”
Hopefully this is the start of some more composed performances and more consistency for the lad. He’s still young, been thrown in at the deep end with huge expectation on his shoulders and playing a position he’s having to learn on the job. Onwards and upwards?
Rumours that he has a cracked rib, which is really painful but should be fine in a week or two if true. I’ve had a couple and they knack, I’m surprised he was able to carry on and to make that sprint for the goal.

Comment #15It’s amazing what can happen when the forward is 40 yards ahead of everyone else, we got bodies close to joelinton in almiron and longstaff and the result was there for all to see, especially after the Brazilian went off injured.
Get players around him like todays set up and we will see more performances like that rather than what we’ve become accustomed to from previous.

Like I’ve said on the lad, he gets dogs abuse but has played through some injuries this season without complaining, get bodies around him and get his confidence up

Comment #17We certainly missed Joe in the second half. Just for his hold up play. And not to have another forward is a disgrace. Hopefully we have Caroll and Gail back for next round.
