Last week, a report claimed that Newcastle were keen on a summer move for Brentford winger Said Benrahma.
The 24-year-old has taken the Championship by storm since joining from Nice for £1.5m in 2018. In just 72 appearances, the Algerian has bagged 19 goals while adding 23 assists.
He is tied to Brentford until 2022, but the club hold an option for another year.
His performances have alerted several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle along with Leicester City and Aston Villa, who were strongly linked with a January move for Benrahma.
The Northern Echo is today reporting that Newcastle had a scout at Brentford’s 3-2 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.
The Brentford Three– Bryan Mbeumo, Ollie Watkins, and Said Benrahma
They were there to watch Benrahma as well as two of his teammates in striker Ollie Watkins and winger Bryan Mbeumo, both of whom scored in the match.
Watkins has been prolific in the Championship this term, scoring 20 goals in his 30 appearances. The 24-year-old joined the Bees from Exeter in 2017.
He has since scored 43 goals in his 124 appearances. Watkins signed an extension to 2023 this past summer, but Brentford have an option to extend it for another year.
Bryan Mbeumo is a current French U21 international who joined Brentford from Troyes this past summer. The 20-year-old plays on the right wing with Said Benrahma generally on the left.
Mbeumo has 12 goals and 6 assists in his 28 Championship appearances. The Troyes Academy product cost Brentford around £5m plus add-ons. His contract runs until 2024.
Newcastle could have also been monitoring Middlesbrough winger Marcus Tavernier, who we were linked with late in 2019. Tavernier left Newcastle to join Middlesborough when he was just 14 in 2013.
He has done exceptionally well for Jonathan Woodgate’s side this season. The 20-year-old just put pen to paper on a new three and a half year deal two weeks ago.
Marcus got an assist in the match at Griffin Park which Newcastle scouts attended.
