In mid-January, Newcastle went on a scouting mission to watch Bordeaux take on Lyon. It was reported that they were there to watch Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, who had a goal and an assist in the match, which Lyon won 2-1.
Sport Witness is citing an article from L’Equipe that claims Lyon will look to cash in on the striker this summer.
According to the report, Chelsea had a £36m bid for the 23-year-old rejected last month. However, they never came back in with an improved offer, which reportedly shocked the Ligue 1 club.
Lyon had already made moves to offset the loss of their star striker last month. They brought in Villareal’s Karl Toko Ekambi on loan with an option to buy and also Le Havre’s Tino Kadawere. Kadawere was sent back on loan to finish the season with Le Havre but will join Lyon in the summer.
So it looks like the French club will listen to offers for the striker this summer. It could be that a bid for around £40m will be enough to prise the Frenchman away from Lyon.
He’ll have plenty of suitors with Chelsea and Manchester United interested in the player. However, he would be quite an addition upfront at Newcastle, having scored 19 goals in 35 appearances this season.
It’s unlikely, but with money to spend, Newcastle could make a run at Dembele in the summer.
