Newcastle have a decent run of fixtures over the next couple of months with some very winnable games against teams in and around us in the table.
It all starts at the Emirates against Arsenal on Sunday. It’s a match that Newcastle will be hoping to get something out of to keep the eight-game unbeaten streak alive.
We, of course, started our season against Arsenal with a 1-0 defeat at St James Park. That seems like eons ago and who would have thought at that time that both clubs would be on equal points with just 13 games remaining.
Mikel Arteta has since come in for Unai Emery for the Gunnars, but Arsenal are still not picking up the points they need to climb into Champions League contention.
That is mainly due to Arsenal not being able to win matches. They have just 9 points in the 8 games since Arteta was appointed despite only losing once.
Arsenal, too are on a lengthy but somewhat mediocre unbeaten run in all competitions. They have not lost since going down 2-1 at home to Chelsea in their final match of 2019. That’s seven games unbeaten, but only one of those was a win in the Premier League.
We hope that to see significant contributions from our three new signings on Sunday. Nabil Bentaleb has started the last three games while both Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose made their debuts against Norwich a few weeks ago.
It doesn’t look like there’ll be too many players returning from injury just yet with only Yoshinori Muto back in full training. However, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, Javier Manquillo, and Jonjo Shelvey are getting close.
With our new signings and a reinvigorated squad after a week off, Newcastle could be ready to mount a charge for the remaining third of the season. That begins on Sunday, where we hope to see Newcastle continue this undefeated run.
