Pundit Barely Mentions Newcastle In Prediction Of Sunday’s Match

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has made his predictions for this weekend’s Premier League action. He thinks Newcastle will not pick up anything at Arsenal and lose 2-0.

This is his prediction in full:

Arsenal are the draw specialists in the Premier League with 13 out of a possible 25 so far, and Newcastle have shared the points in three of their past five league matches.

So, I suppose the most sensible prediction here would be a draw, but I am actually going to go with a Gunners victory.

Arsenal’s results under Mikel Arteta have not been great, but I still think things are improving as the players get used to Arteta’s methods and his demands.

Arteta needs a win soon, of course, but it is not as if he is under any great pressure because he has only been in charge for a few weeks.

I think the fact the Gunners are 10 points off fourth and a Champions League spot takes the pressure off them. It would be just like Arsenal to go on a run that puts them back in contention for that.

Well, it was kind of Lawrenson to reference Newcastle in at least of one of his sentences. 🙂

Though, we have to disagree that Arteta isn’t feeling any pressure. While his job is not under any real threat at the moment, he does need to start picking up wins.

The Spaniard has been at the helm for more than just a few weeks as Lawro puts it. He’s closing in on two months since he was appointed as the replacement for his compatriot Unai Emery.

In that time, Arsenal have picked up just one win but also only one defeat in the league. The other six matches have all been draws. They have also advanced through the FA Cup with wins against Leeds and at Bournemouth.

They are unbeaten in their seven fixtures in the new year, but like Newcastle, it hasn’t exactly been a glorious run.

Newcastle meanwhile are on an eight-game unbeaten stretch in all competitions. While they’ve managed to do enough to not lose, they’ve put in some dreadful displays during this spell.

Newcastle and Arsenal are both on 31 points with Arsenal’s superior goal difference, placing them 2 spots above Newcastle in the Premier League in 10th.

Something will have to give at the Emirates on Sunday. We hope a rejuvenated Newcastle will have enough to get a result.

What Will Be The Result At Arsenal On Sunday?

  • Draw (29%, 735 )
  • Win (27%, 694 )

Danny Rose is a good addition for the rest of the season, not sure about the other signings. Will be a test for us on Sunday against the gunners and we’ll either get a good hiding or sneak a last minute win.
    I’m going for a valuable draw 0-0.
Well done to the head coach he has done well to keep us mid table so far and he seems to have the team playing for him. Not who i wanted at the helm but fair play, 3 more wins to guaranteed survival. Hwtl

    …………………Dubravka.
    ……..Scharr..Lascelles..Lejeune.
    Lazaro…Bentaleb…Longstaff…Rose.
    …..Almiron……..Joel……..St Max.

Decent 11 for sure, and bench too hopefully.

Both centre mids must be encouraged to get forward for 90 minutes, although not both at the same time. When one goes, the other trails. Both fullbacks must get forward too, similarly.

Defending deep makes sense away from home against Arsenal’s attack, but we need to break through our wingbacks and centre midfield, rather than only through Miggy and St Max, and certainly not long to an isolated Joel, unless we are primarily clearing our lines.

Hard earned, hard fought 1-1, with a Joelinton or Carroll equalizer, having bested Luiz to grab it.

I think Hayden instead of Longstaff. Only because it will allow rose and particularly Lazaro to bomb forward with more freedom. St maximin And Almiron can then be narrower with Joelinton

    Nicky,

I assume your 11 are based on who is fit?
I wouldn’t personally start with Lazaro and Schaar on the right hand side.
    Too open for me.

Anyway, all opinions are welcome and valid 🙂

Yeah NY, it might be too open, but Lazaro has come out of a Conte squad, so he will know the value of defensive shape, and Yedlin is a 6 out of 10 wing back in my opinion, so while we have Lazaro why not pitch him in early and see if he can give us a bit more up and down the right.

Fede in place of Scharr is of course fine, and would tighten us up, but we have 31 points from 25 games so we are relatively safe, and I’m sure we’d all like to see us playing a bit more “football”, so that’s my 11.

Similar argument with Lejeune and Rose on the other side. Get Lejeune and Scharr hitting Lazaro and Rose in advanced positions with those great pinged long cross fields passes on that big Emirates pitch, allowing us to break in numbers.

    Nicky,

Fair enough mate….There’s no wrong or right, just opinions being thrown out there.

I hope we do well after the rest….it’s probably the best chance in many years that we have at getting a result at arsenal. They are really not good at the moment.

Yes, for sure you might be right, and I think in reality we might easily see this 11 start, and still a decent side.

    ………………Dubravka.
    ……..Fede….Lascelles…Clark.
    Yedlin…Hayden..Bentaleb…Ritchie.
    …..Almiron……Joel……..St Max.
