Report – Bruce To Push Newcastle To Extend Contract Of Influential Striker

Andy Carroll has only played a total of 39 minutes in 2020. That was a second-half substitute at Wolves as well as the 4-1 win over Rochdale in the FA Cup replay.

After that Rochdale match over a month ago, Andy has been out with a reported hip injury. He’s been in and out with little niggles since he made his season debut against Brighton in September.

However, on both previous occasions, the 31-year-old only ended up missing one match. The good news is that none of the injuries have to do with his surgically repaired ankle.

Carroll has had an impact in his return to Newcastle both on and off the pitch. He’s seen by Bruce as a strong presence in the dressing room whose experience is helpful to the other strikers at the club.

On the pitch, he has made 14 appearances but barely played over 500 minutes of football. However, his physical play is a handful for opposing defenders and his 4 assists puts him joint-top with Christian Atsu.

His contract is also very team-friendly. Andy is on a low base salary with appearance-based incentives in what basically amounts to a pay as you play situation.

This contract was only for one year. So Newcastle will have a decision to make about the big Geordie over the next few months.

The Northern Echo is reporting that Steve Bruce will push the club to extend Carroll past this summer.

They cite Bruce’s belief that Andy has had a positive impact behind the scenes. He is seen as a leader whose attachment to the club has a significant influence on the squad.

The report says that Newcastle would likely only be willing to offer Andy a similar contract to his current one. It is believed that he would be agreeable to continue with the current arrangement.

We think Andy still has a role to play at his hometown club. While he can’t be depended on to play regularly, his commanding presence both on and off the pitch is worth having for the next few seasons.

Totally agree with you hibbit, if we buy a proper no 9 then I wouldn’t give Carroll a new deal but it’s the fat c@nt factor

We should have bought Bowen, a good solid player who could play up front or mid if required.
    Not a flash harry.

Instead of pleading to have Carroll’s contract extended, wouldn’t he be better pushing to get the Longstaffs and other good players tied down with contracts that’ll keep them at NUFC?

And Carroll’s a good influence on the strikers?
