Danny Rose was a bit of a surprise signing in January. We were linked with him in the summer, but at the time it seemed a stretch.
However, once Jetro Willems went down with a season-ending injury, Bruce was going to have to bring in another left-back.
The sudden need at the position coincided with Danny Rose’s struggle to get games under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.
With the England international needing to play regularly in anticipation of this summer’s European Championship, the two problems found a perfect solution with Danny joining Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season.
Steve Bruce’s son Alex has been talking to Football Insider quite a bit today. Earlier, he had mentioned recommending Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard to his father as a possible target for Newcastle.
Now, the former Ipswich, Leeds, and Hull defender has divulged some insider information on how Danny Rose is faring in training so far. This is what he had to say:
“Dad says in the first couple of weeks he’s had in training he looks the part. You can tell by the way he just moves and keeps the ball, he’s going to be a proper player for them and he’s looking forward to having him in the team.
“He was in the Champions League final a few months ago, playing for Spurs. He’s been a Premier League player now, a regularly consistent Premier League player for a number of years.
“The fact that Dad’s got him there, I think the fact he’s a Leeds lad, and he wanted to come back up north has been huge in him joining Newcastle.”
An inspired and performing Danny Rose could be a big boost to this Newcastle side. We definitely are encouraged by what Alex Bruce says about the 29-year-old.
Rose could add a lot of quality down the left flank if he can reach the heights of a few years ago when he was one of the best left-backs in England.
We think Steve Bruce will still go with Matt Ritchie from the start at Arsenal. However, if Rose is training as well as it sounds, he could nail down the left wing-back position very soon.
That would allow Matt Ritchie to move further forward though he would have trouble unseating either Allan Saint-Maximin or Miguel Almiron on the wings.
This type of fight for places is needed all across the pitch. The three players Newcastle brought in on loan last month have not only added quality but also boosted the competition for a place in the starting eleven.
