An Improved Newcastle Restrict Arsenal In Scoreless First Half

Newcastle came out in their familiar 5-4-1 with Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose as the wing-backs. The lads sat deep from the start but looked quite threatening on the break.

A lot of the early play came through Valentino Lazaro down the right who was very lively in his full debut. The lads won some early corners and created a few chances while defending well during the first 20 minutes.

The game remained open as the half progressed. Newcastle continued to look a threat with their direct runs. However, they wasted several promising opportunities in the final third.

The difference in possession was markedly better from the Norwich match. The lads looked very composed on the ball with Sean Longstaff standing out when on the ball.

The defense was also very well set-up. Arsenal struggled to break us down and were forced into launching long-range efforts.

Both sides are missing that moment of quality in the forward areas. However, Newcastle look much improved and reinvigorated even if Arsenal did edge the final ten minutes of the half.

Joelinton had just made a tackle on saka by the right touchline well in his own half. Stayed down hold his rib, we attacked ASM lost it, arsenal countered and joelinton was in defence helping out. Got ball back and ASM went on that run which no one was in box.

Maybe people should open their eyes and follow what’s happening in the game instead of scapegoating and asking why joelinton wasnt in box.

Have to say we looked very good in that half, dangerous on counter and bossed the opening 20 to 25mins

Someone on last thread said boring football sitting back, we are playing arsenal away and we’ve looked more dangerous.

Best half in a while for us lads
    My player ratings
Dubravka – 8 – Solid again for us looks comfortable
Lazaro – 8 – Quick, Can cross, can pass, looks great so far IMO
Clark – 6 – Alright not seen him do much
Lascelles – 7 – Looks a bit slow on the ball but solid
Fernandez – 8 – Gets forward too much but a rock at the back and is feeding our midfield
Sean – 6 – Alright Performance so far nothing to shout about
Bentaleb – 7 – Looks sharp on the ball but not doing enough defensively
ASM – 8 – Trying his best with the support he has, constantly getting fouled.
Almiron – 7 – Looks quick but needs to be more aware
Joelinton 8 – Seems to be all over the pitch, needs to pass more and stop losing posession, apart from that quality

Bruce – 7 – Seems to be getting things moving a bit better, but still playing 5 at the back.

Would put on Hayden for Longstaff soon.
    Howay the lads!

Our Toon: “joelinton was in defence helping out”. That’s exactly the problem. A forward needs to always be thinking about his primary objective, and that is to get into goal scoring positions and be thriving off Maximin.

You cannot really say Joelinton is being scapegoated. The guy’s goalscoring record is atrocious. There’re no injustices here in asking questions of Joelinton’s positioning.

Look up the definition of “scapegoating”.

Most points against top 6 this season with 10pts. That’s not including the big 6, the set up suits us for bigger teams. Problem can be games where we are expected to win and play better.

Gotta say all 3 Jan signings look very good, bentaleb very astute on the ball and looks to play a risky pass which is needed, not a long ball attempt or hollywood pass but a pass which keeps us ticking forward

this is the best newcastle have looked for a while. sign lazaro now..defensively really strong and much more of an attacking threat than yedlin/manquillo.

rose looks a little off the pace, maybe he was told not to go forward by Bruce? doubt it..i think he’ll be sub’d first

joelinton looked really good for the first 25 minutes because he had space..

not good with a player on his back

The weak area atm is Longstaff unfortunately he hasn’t got into the game like oxford. Hopefully he will Improve the second half.

Rose seems nervous and doesn’t want the ball, but hasn’t done bad, I’d like to see more from him second half also.

    Ancient are you thick lad?

Joelinton was down injured hence why he took up lazaros position at wing back since lazaro went forward and Joe was just getting up.

    Some people man.

Joelinton is clearly having an injury which is why he wasn’t getting in the box as he can’t keep up.
i’m worried if joe has to go off injured as we have no striker on the bench.

    Ancient

He was initially defending the corner, you watching the game? He cleared the shot with his head after dubs flapped, then wins the ball back on our right near the box with a good challenge.

Forwards these days defend alot more than days gone by, step into 2020 and leave the 90s behind mate, them days are long gone as forwards have to do alot more defensively now

There’s definitely a win for the taking in this game. Judging from the past few games of Arsenals that I’ve seen, they should come flying out the first 10 minutes of the second half.

If we contain them and directly counter them, they should follow their usual trend and tire/slow significantly for the last half an hour or so.

Our Toon, the point I was trying to make was that bar corners we never have anyone in the box when Miggy or Max break away. So it is a worldy, or a corner conceded, or nothing. Mostly nothing.
Ok if Joelinton had made that tackle, but week on week I watch him at SJP and he never busts a gut to get into the area, never gambles on the near post or anything.
I never thought we would miss Perez but I was wrong there.
Mind you whoever drew a parallel between him and what’s his name, the Dutchman who came good in Serie A, had a good point. JL is a 10 not a solo striker.

Mag P, yes, Joelinton is usually somewhere else when balls are going into the box. There will always be a reason why he isn’t where he should be as a centre-forward. That’s the point people are making, that has gone totally over your head.

26 games into the season with 1 goal. Give me a break.

If you want to question being “thick”, how about putting profile pics up and pouting on a football blog. Real clever you are.

Joelinton is never in the box but it’s not his fault. Which explains his single goal so far.

We defend so far deep but when we break away joelinton is not going to keep up with the pace of St max and almiron. Not many will.

    Stop blaming him.

When are people going to realise that joelinton isnt a number 9? He’s always been a 2nd striker (no10) or wide forward in his career.

So stop complaining about what you think he should be and realise that he’s playing a new role to him in a new league in his first season, in a side that very rarely crosses or creates little

    FFS. Terrible, slack defending.

Just dropped intensity all round. Thought we’d come back out recharged and back on it, but nope. Same patter as the last 15 and now we’re behind.

That first 30 promise has fizzled out.

Has to be said though, I don’t think I have ever come across anybody as sad, needy, preachy and inadequate as you on so many levels. It’s always someone else’s fault and you always know best, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Please take this in the right spirit, I really do feel genuinely sorry for you having to be you. It can’t be easy as you’re clearly a man with issues and extreme rabid views that don’t really sit with conventional thinking.
