Bruce Bemoans Poor Defending And Serious Injury In Post-Match Comments

Steve Bruce spoke after the 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal this evening. For much of the first half, we looked a very good side.

Bruce echoed that sentiment before admitting that the second-half display was uncharacteristically bad, especially defensively.

This is what he had to say as published in the Chronicle.

“I was extremely pleased with how we played in the first half. We defended well and looked a threat on the counter-attack.

“We had one or two opportunities where we didn’t take the right option at the end.

“I didn’t see that coming in the second half. We gave bad goals away which isn’t like us. We usually don’t give much away.

“When that fourth goal happens you think it wasn’t our day.”

Bruce continued in the same vein about the Jekyll and Hyde performance in the two halves. He again emphasized the poor defending and lack of resiliency which are uncommon for this team.

“We’ve played well enough in the first half. We’ve got to try and make sure we get to those levels.

“We never got anywhere near that in the second half and that is the disappointing thing for me.

“The goals we’ve given away aren’t us. The reason we’ve had a little bit of success is that resilience to defend and play against a team like we have done. We haven’t done enough.”

Lee Ryder also issued the following tweet about Ciaran Clark’s injury.

The below tweet from Injury Mechanisms shows how badly Clark’s ankle is twisted under Bukayo Saka.

It doesn’t look good for the 30-year-old who’s been one of our most consistent performers this season.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In Defeat At Arsenal?

  • A. Saint-Maximin (66%, 893 )

  • Federico Fernandez (3%, 35 )
  • Miguel Almiron (3%, 35 )
  • Danny Rose (2%, 27 )
  • Nabil Bentaleb (2%, 23 )
  • Ciaran Clark (2%, 21 )

Think Clark is going to miss a good chunk of the season it didn’t look great.

Would still love to know what the half time team talk was as we seemed to just stop playing

Oh dear mr Bruce, just shut it & do one, you are clueless, getting those lucky points early on, may just be enough to keep us up this year, what a pathetic club we have become after 13 years of Ashley, nothing changes & never will…

DubaiMicky on a couple threads back re bruce’s negative comments before the match. Yeah imagine if rafa had dared say anything like that the rafa haters would have been all over him and having him hung drawn and quartered. Has the luck we have had in the first part of season finally ran out, well Bruce had better come up with a plan b or c just in case.

Palace at home next well that’s certainly a banker then not. Zaha penalty anyone? If the talk that Bruce turned down 60 million in January is true, well I hope he knows something we don’t as gambling on not bringing in a striker is reckless to say the least especially given two strikers are at knackers yard one isn’t a striker and other is somewhat of a mystery to everybody

Our goal difference has long suggested we are more likely to fall than rise as the season unfolds. Last season was the opposite. Added to that 4 nil is not the result you want when you are introducing players you hope will add the quality that will allow you to open it up a bit more and get more traction in attacking areas.

It’s a good thing we have 31 points already in the bag. I do hope we continue to try to find ways to counter more effectively, basically getting as many of Schar, Lejeune, Fede, Lazaro, Rose, Bentaleb and Shelvey on the pitch as we can behind Almiron, Joel and St Max, without opening it up too much, but this could quite easily still become touch and go, particularly if we lose a few in quick succession.

MagpieRanger, rather hate Ashley not Bruce. But he has to learn if he is coming out with pardew type excuses constantly and being ashley’s mouthpiece most fans won’t be endeared to him.

We have been unbelievably lucky so far this season. I can’t recall a team being luckier in all my time watching the prem. you can’t get played off the park every game and not expect to lose the large majority of matches.

Does anybody think Ashley watches any of the games? Surely he knows how shit we are? Why hasn’t he sold? We are screwed next season if things stay as they are. We’ll be lucky to stay up this season if we don’t be careful.

Anglo Saxon Bruce has answered your question about what we do best:

“The reason we’ve had a little bit of success is that resilience to defend and play against a team like we have done. We haven’t done enough.”

He plays the same formation every week. Getting sick of it now. Almiron seems frightened to shoot. Don’t know what’s wrong with him. Thought we had a chance of beating Arsenal today. Shame about Clark. He’s been a good player for us. I would play the following:

    Darlow

    Yedlin Schar Lejuene Rose

    Lazaro Bentaleb Saint-Maximin

    Almiron

    Gayle Joelinton

If we were on 25 points I’d be very worried but I reckon 38 will be enough and even we will get that many.

Honestly first 35 today we were better than we’ve been in ages.

4-0 just makes everyone panic, do you think Southampton are certaint go down?

They lost 9-0 at home but they will be fine too

Bentaleb doesn’t look great so far but he’s only new. Lazaro looked ok in the first half. Almiron is great at running with the ball but is struggling with his final ball and getting shots in.

Round & Stuivenberg sussed out that Lazaro was our defensive weak link
    Yedlin and Manquillo are injured
They told Arteta where to concentrate
The first two goals came from pressure from their left
After that it was the familiar story of a side chasing a game being vulnerable

We’ve lost heavily today but we’re not any closer to bottom three in terms of points.

We will scrape by it’s provably Norwich, Watford and one other. Brighton are not brilliant and West Ham are far from playing well.

Not sticking up for Bruce but we’re absolutely no better or worse than under Rafa. Our football is very similar, the core of players are exactly the same. Rafa used to say “I don’t know what went wrong”. Bruce admitted we were not good enough, same reflection when we put a poor performance.
We need to strengthen simple as.

Bruce’s half time talk must have been a classic.
    No hair dryer
    No goals
    No clue
” Think you can hang on here lads , just focus on the goal less draw”

I was driving listening to the match. That’s dangerous.

Yesterday two season ticket reminders arrived.

Well TBF if you’re going to start a game without a good representation of the core defence from last season that has bundled you through so far this season, it’s difficult to expect instant cohesion and co-operation on the back line. Something has to give and this was it today. I suppose there’s every chance it can be made to work in time to cement safety but we’ll have to see i suppose.

Btw, Steve – this “only get players in who will improve the team” thing – how’s that working for you? Hmm.
