With Newcastle only spending loan fees in January while also not fully exhausting the previous window’s budget, there could be quite a bit to spend come the summer.
Last summer Steve Bruce was handed around £50m plus any outgoing fees to spend. The club ended up shelling out close to £60m on our five signings, four of which were permanent.
We also sold Ayoze Perez and Joselu for about £32m, with the bulk of that coming from Leicester City triggering Ayoze’s £30m release clause.
That would leave about £20m left over that should be added to the summer’s budget. However, you can never really tell with Newcastle because they like to lump in agent fees and player wages as part of the budget.
As part of their Q&A today, the Chronicle’s Andrew Musgrove was asked if there would be significant transfer funds available this summer. This is was his response:
Yes I do. I think if this season goes to plan and Newcastle stay up, Bruce will get a spending spree in the summer.
“How much will that be? It’s always hard to say, but I’d think between £60million to £80million should be at his disposal if the right targets arise.
Between £60-80m is a good guess for this summer’s budget. Though we think it should certainly be closer to the higher end of those numbers. We’ll also have to see if any players are sold that can increase that amount.
If all goes well with loan signings Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb, their purchase options could be triggered. Their fees are reportedly around £20 for Lazaro and £8.5m for Bentaleb.
So that’s already a significant chunk of the budget right there. There could also be a free agent or two come in as well.
It’s shaping up to be a big summer for this club with possibly a big-money signing or two to add to the quality of the squad.
But as Musgrove says, they still have a job to do this season. That begins on Saturday at Crystal Palace where we need to see a reaction.

Comment #49Ok I’ve got my flack coat on……..
I would have much preferred David Moyes as Manager after Rafa went than Steve Bruce!
Moyes did a very canny job at Everton and Man U was a mistake on his part but I could understand why he went there!

After three days of waiting for an answer to my question (Why are Leicester, Wolves, Sheffield Utd and others outstripping NUFC in all departments (except incompetence)?), you still haven’t provided one.
Come on Jib, has Bishop let you down, not backed you with an answer? Is he, like you having a problem coming up with it?
If it’s any comfort, Bill’s son hasn’t come back with the answer either…… coincidence or what?

Comment #52Pound for pound Joelinton is easily our worst buy.
You wait 14 years to double your transfer record and buy Joelinton. Come on. There are one or two worse forwards but none cost 40 million
Job how much do you think big joe is worth? What would you pay for him?

Owen was a bad buy because of injuries etc but he scored a few goals and cost £16 million. Joelinton cost £40 million and will never score goals!
You’re only saying Owen because Freddie signed him and not Ashley! You’re so transparent it’s embarrassing!

Comment #59and meanwhile Ashley sold the Strawberry land. His role model must be Nero.
Everton have appointed a preferred contractor for the club’s new 52,000 capacity stadium on Liverpool’s waterfront.
Laing O’Rourke has been chosen to construct the venue at Bramley-Moore Dock at an estimated cost of £500m.
Final plans were revealed in December 2019 including four distinctive stands and a steep end for 13,000 home fans.If approved, work on the new stadium is expected to start later this year and is expected to take three years.
Chief Executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale said the club was a step closer to “delivering a new world-class waterfront stadium for Everton”.

You clearly have a formula in place to decide Joelintons worth.
Can you share?
What stats have you used to decided he is “pound for pound” our worse buy?
Genuinely curious to know what model/functions you use.
Is he “pound for pound” worse than Albert Luque?
OR
is this just all your biased opinion mixed in with cherry picked stats to support your claim.
Please note. I am impartial but would like to read your response.

To put it into perspective, for £40 million (Joelinton’s reported fee) you could buy 2.1/2 Rondons, 20 Rivieres, or 8 Joselus. Oh, and 3 Wijnaldums !
Does that make it any clearer or do you think he’s been a good buy?

It’s all just opinions.
As a player he is not the worst striker or forward we have bought. There are several ahead of him .but 40 million for a striker with one goal in 26 games makes him a very bad buy.
Or do you think him a good buy or even a decent buy at 40 million .???
Put it another way how much would you pay for him today from Hoffenheim if he was on loan. Interested in your value of him.

Comment #73Still, its hard to judge Joe with this kind of football Newcastle plays. He did wasted some clear cut chances, but I don’t blame him being demotivated. When your job is boring, you produce less for sure. Is there another team more boring than Newcastle in the Premiere League at the moment?
