There was a report a couple of days ago about how Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare had been frozen out at his club after refusing to move to Newcastle in January.
It seems that the 20-year-old’s situation may now be slightly improved after holding a meeting with the club’s hierarchy. Yesterday, Soumare released the following statement on the club’s website, according to Sport Witness:
“We needed to talk to each other to resolve a situation concerning the management and development of my career.
“Now it’s settled. We need to move forward. We need to take three points on Saturday to reach our podium ambitions. That’s all I’m interested in.
“I’m really very happy to be at the LOSC. There’s an extraordinary project here for the young players!
“It’s also a balance with more experienced players who allow us to develop on a daily basis.
“I hope we end up on the podium, that we can get back to the C1 for our fans. I’m confident in the club’s project and that of its president, Gerard Lopez.
“My agents and I are working hand in hand and in good understanding with the club.”
Sport Witness have followed up with an intriguing claim this morning. They cite reports from France that Newcastle are still working on a plan to tempt the midfielder to Newcastle this summer.
The report says that Newcastle’s offer, which was accepted by Lille last month, is still on the table. They are also still in contact with representatives of the French U21 international for a summer move.
Apparently, Newcastle are offering Soumare, who turns 21 in a week, double his current wages and guaranteed playing time. We don’t doubt that Newcastle would offer to significantly increase the player’s wages, but promising that he’ll start a certain amount of games seems a dodgy proposition.
News that Newcastle are still going after Soumare doesn’t fit with local reports that the club have moved on from the midfielder after being rebuffed in January.
We’re not sure which report is the most accurate. However, it seems very likely that if the player changed his mind and wanted to join this summer, Newcastle wouldn’t hesitate to bring him in.
