Yesterday in the Chronicle’s Q&A, Andrew Musgrove was asked about the contract situation with Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey. Both players are on deals that are due to expire in 2021.
Musgrove believes that both player’s contracts are basically done and just waiting to be announced. This is what he wrote.
As far as we’re concerned, they are done subject to official announcements. There were some recycled reports claiming “exclusive” over the weekend from our original stories from December and January.
Last week, the Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth also claimed this to be the case.
Speaking to Football Insider, Steve Bruce’s son Alex thinks that getting both players extended would be very welcomed by his father. According to Alex, Bruce rates both highly and thinks they add a great deal to the team.
“Two good players. We know what Shelvey brings to the team – good on the ball and creates a lot for Newcastle.
“Ritchie is a great lad by all accounts and is a big influence in the dressing room, and I know for a fact my dad thinks a lot of him. He is an honest type that you would want in your squad.
“Now he is over his injury he will be a good player to have, and if he has agreed a new deal I am sure my dad will be delighted. It would be good for the club to get them tied down.”
We hope that Newcastle can start to get some of the players Bruce intends to keep signed before the summer transfer business starts. They seem to have left these contracts on the back burner during the January window to concentrate on incomings.
Now is the time to get the core of the squad extended, so this summer can be one where quality is added to hopefully push the team forward next season.

Comment #3Did I miss something, does Alex ( I think I’m important ) Bruce work for Newcastle United now?
Maybe I missed a huge bus, but honestly did we give us a job?
