It was an excellent start to life as Newcastle’s U23 manager for Chris Hogg. In his first match in charge, the youngsters have defeated Scunthorpe United 6-2 to advance in the Premier League Cup.

It didn’t take long for the lads to get going as Tom Allan scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. That takes his season tally to 16, so he’s closing in on the 20 goal mark very quickly.
Newcastle added a third through Elliot Anderson in the 42nd minute before Scunthorpe pulled one back to make it 3-1 at the break. Lee Ryder tweeted the following about Anderson, who was playing as a defensive midfielder.
Wow. Elliot Anderson picks the ball up on halfway strides past the defence and casually slots it past the keeper from inside the box. ??? #NUFC

Former Magpie Yasin Ben El-Mhanni pulled Scunthorpe back to within one with a goal in the 54th minute.
The young Magpies fought back and added a fourth goal through Jack Young. The 19-year-old midfielder banged in a free-kick from 20 yards out. Young is one of the youngsters Bruce has called up to train with the first team on occasion this year.
Newcastle added another in the 77th minute with Yannick Toure scoring for a second consecutive match. The 19-year-old striker also scored with a header against Sunderland last Friday.
Defender Oisin McEntee scored in stoppage time to make the final score 6-2. The 6’3″ McEntee had trained with the first team on Wednesday.
The lads have given a performance indicative of having a new manager in charge. They’ll all be eager to impress Hogg and took care of business this afternoon.
Here is some of what the new manager said after the game to nufc.co.uk:
“I made a point to them about having a real, ruthless mentality. That’s what you’re going to need to make a career in the game. I think they showed real character to score more goals and the belief rose again and we saw the game out relatively comfortably.
“The group seems to be full of confidence and there’s some good characters in there. There seems to be a good vibe around the players at the minute.
“A lot of talk around results helps breed that and my job is to try and develop that confidence and develop certain aspects of individual game but, for sure, if we can keep the collective game strong, that helps everything tick along and helps everyone understand why we do certain things, when you’re getting results at the end of the game.”
