Bruce Gives Positive Account Of New Magpie’s Performance

Of the three loan lads, Valentino Lazaro by far looked the best for Newcastle. He was one of the few Magpies playing with any urgency to bring the ball forward.

The Austrian also did a commendable job on Wilfried Zaha, who was kept quiet for significant periods of the game.

Unfortunately, Valentino was given a straight red for his professional foul in the final minute, meaning he’ll be unavailable for the crucial match against Burnley on Saturday.

After the match, Steve Bruce was asked about Lazaro’s sending off. The Chronicle have published some of his comments:

“With 10 seconds to go, does the referee really have to send him off? Is a yellow not sufficient? But rules are rules and we will abide by it.

“He played very well today, we didn’t find him enough – in wide areas, we ignored the lad. We needed to get it out to him, but he played very well.

“Our biggest problem all season has been evident – we have to create more of a threat in the opponent’s area – we have to look at it and analyze it, maybe change is sometimes for the best.”

Bruce mentioned changing things a lot after yesterday’s performance. The first thing Bruce may need to do is bring Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie back in for Nabil Bentaleb and Danny Rose.

The midfield pairing of Longstaff and Bentaleb does not complement each other, and that has been apparent in the past two games. We’ll also need some of Ritchie’s fire at St James Park against Burnley.

Hopefully, Javier Manquillo can come back in at right wing-back and pick up where he left off before he was injured on New Year’s Day.

Lazaro will miss next week, but we like some of what we’ve seen from the 23-year-old. It wouldn’t surprise us if Manquillo comes back and plays well, that Lazaro could put Miguel Almiron’s place at right-wing under threat.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player At Crystal Palace?

  • Martin Dubravka (79%, 1,121 )
  • A. Saint-Maximin (9%, 133 )
  • Valentino Lazaro (3%, 45 )
  • Joelinton (2%, 30 )
  • Dwight Gayle (1%, 19 )
  • Fabian Schar (1%, 15 )
  • Miguel Almiron (1%, 13 )
  • Sean Longstaff (1%, 10 )
  • Federico Fernandez (1%, 9 )
  • Matt Ritchie (1%, 9 )
  • Nabil Bentaleb (0%, 6 )
  • Danny Rose (0%, 5 )
  • Jamaal Lascelles (0%, 4 )

I really don’t think rafa needed the money, I heard he was worth in excess of 25m. I think he was just sick of all the complicity, duplicity and any other icity that came his way in his time fighting fires here and winning little victories. As he said when he left ” I could not trust the board”. Would any of us argue with that? Ash, bishop, barnes and charnley are collectively as unpleasant a bunch of people you could ever meet.

The stupid thing is that rafa’s wages would have been massively dwarfed by the 40M he could have saved ash on.Joel. Crazy knee jerk forcing Rafa out and a mistake that is sadly built to last. Apparently Bruce’s latest gem is ”we need to score goals to win matches ” Wow, a regular Poirrot there in our midst.

Unless there is a massive all boycott, maybe the only alternative is to drop a division and cut off the advertising revenue to the fat man. Only when it starts costing him money will he finally maybe relinquish his toy. Rest assured bruce will be the to keep us down there for a while.

    What would he do though
Will always play 5 at the back 4 in midfield and 1 upfront would love it if he did actually revert to 4 3 3 think we have enough flair players to do it

I have no idea why Bentaleb and Rose came straight into the starting lineup. I think that Ashley pushing to use new players. Something like: “I bought you new toys, if you don’t play them, don’t ask for new one later…”.

Watching game yesterday and highlights from other matches from Saturday, I don’t see team we can win without good amount of luck. Relegation battle isn’t over.

    Dubai

    Watched it twice now.

The ear definitely affected Wilder but he seemed gassed from half way through the second.

From the end of the second he looked lost, couldn’t cope, his legs were gone.

On second viewing the ref probably should of stopped it earlier, Wilder was struggling to defend himself and could barely stay on his feet, totally flat foot from the second round on.

OP on ASM I don’t think you can judge him by goals and assists in this team/set up. Messi would not be the same player if he was here. Managers are probably looking at him and thinking if he was playing in a more attacking set up he would be much more effective. You can see that from watching him every week. Top top player worth at least 45m in my eyes.

That’s who I was thinking of.

Theres a real player inside of ASM.

We don’t have a Ferguson type manager or a Keane type captain to coerce and nurture him, unfortunately.

I saw him a few times last year, same outcome in a more attacking team.

I commented before the season started I’d stick him up front through the middle as that’s where he normally drifts.

At least we don’t have to sit through another 90+ minutes of absolute garbage today.

At least we don’t have to listen to more drivel from our Sunday league class coach.

Alex doesn’t tend to spout his my Daddy says rubbish on a Sunday.

Could Poch have succeeded with rafa’s budget? Joelinton cost more than the whole team Rafa regularly had to put out.

I would have paid Rafa twice what he was earning to have peace of mind and to know that the club was moving forward from top to bottom. We were doomed the minute bruce was announced and ash still wants 340M with this clueless buffoon in charge!!! 40M for Joel, 5M for Kraft and Bruce thinks if it hasn’t worked 30 times it will the next!! Einstein was right.

ASM (+ Miggy) consistently has to pick the ball up in his own half and looks shattered by the time he gets up the pitch with no one especially Joel anywhere near the 6 yard box to pass to. You could imagine under a proper coach ASM would reach great levels.
