Of the three loan lads, Valentino Lazaro by far looked the best for Newcastle. He was one of the few Magpies playing with any urgency to bring the ball forward.
The Austrian also did a commendable job on Wilfried Zaha, who was kept quiet for significant periods of the game.
Unfortunately, Valentino was given a straight red for his professional foul in the final minute, meaning he’ll be unavailable for the crucial match against Burnley on Saturday.
After the match, Steve Bruce was asked about Lazaro’s sending off. The Chronicle have published some of his comments:
“With 10 seconds to go, does the referee really have to send him off? Is a yellow not sufficient? But rules are rules and we will abide by it.
“He played very well today, we didn’t find him enough – in wide areas, we ignored the lad. We needed to get it out to him, but he played very well.
“Our biggest problem all season has been evident – we have to create more of a threat in the opponent’s area – we have to look at it and analyze it, maybe change is sometimes for the best.”
Bruce mentioned changing things a lot after yesterday’s performance. The first thing Bruce may need to do is bring Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie back in for Nabil Bentaleb and Danny Rose.
The midfield pairing of Longstaff and Bentaleb does not complement each other, and that has been apparent in the past two games. We’ll also need some of Ritchie’s fire at St James Park against Burnley.
Hopefully, Javier Manquillo can come back in at right wing-back and pick up where he left off before he was injured on New Year’s Day.
Lazaro will miss next week, but we like some of what we’ve seen from the 23-year-old. It wouldn’t surprise us if Manquillo comes back and plays well, that Lazaro could put Miguel Almiron’s place at right-wing under threat.

Comment #43I’d like to see us narrow the front 3, play them closer together. Switch Saint and Almiron, take a body out of back line and play higher up. This passive, defensive shite is pathetic. Only upside of us continuing to lose might be we stay up by skin of our teeth, i.e carver season, and we change managers in the summer. A Man can dream

we got all the pre season bluster from bruce about how he was going to introduce attacking play yadda yadda yadda. Then despite effectively 8 new signings he started to play the ridiculously toe curling blame game with rafa. Is the guy really so guileless and lacking any kind of gumption that he can not stamp his own type of playing identity. I think this is as good as it gets with Bruce, as plan A if there is one, is anyone’s guess, let alone B, C + D.

spot on, it’s like bruce is paralysed when it comes to changing anything. His motto seems to be, if it’s broken, don’t fix it.

That link really gets to the nub of it.
I think many of us and those with even a little bit of perspective and rationale could see the car crash that ash had set in motion, forcing out rafa and 2 top goal scorers and bringing in the Z lister of all Z listers in Bruce and an impotent expensively assembled new strike force. Ash just couldn’t leave well alone when for once things were lookig on an upward curve. Why always us!!!!

So if Rose and Bentaleb look no better than what we’ve got what would Graham potter have been able to do with them. People keep talking about these young progressive managers but who are they. Viera, Gerrard and Arteta turned us down, Jaap Staam reckons he knocked us back.

Gibraltar is an interesting place a little bit of UK really with British style bobbys and phone boxes. There’s not a lot there really once you’ve seen the apes on the mount.
We regularly fly into Gib when we go to southern Spain as the airport is a lot less stressful than Malaga.

Comment #60I think our only hope of getting rid of Ashley (and Bruce) is to drop down to the champo and cut the money streams.
Although, is there any slim possibility that a buyer is waiting to see if we stay up before bidding?
I’m dreaming again aren’t I ?
