Jamaal Lascelles made his 100th Premier League appearance for Newcastle in the loss at Crystal Palace this past Saturday. This morning the captain gave an interview to NUFC TV about this achievement.
While Lascelles was proud of reaching this milestone, he was obviously not happy with the result of the match. During his interview, he was asked if the team spirit was still high. In his answer, Jamaal hinted at a change in tactics for this Saturday’s match against Burnley.
“Yes, of course. In terms of everyone’s togetherness and the team spirit, it’s really high. If you’ve seen the boys in training, it’s intense.
“We get after each other. We demand a lot of each other, and we’re getting a few lads from injury as well, which is important.
“Hopefully, Jonjo’s fit. We’ve made a few changes. Lads have had to adapt to different styles of play, which might take a while to bed in.
“So hopefully, two games now is enough, and we can get a win.”
It would be a massive boost for Newcastle to have Jonjo Shelvey fit and available this weekend. From Jamaal’s comments, it looks like Jonjo is back training and could be available against Burnley.
Shelvey, who turns 28 tomorrow, hasn’t played since the Chelsea win last month. Having Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden back together in the midfield could help provide some stability in the middle of the pitch.
Lascelles also spoke about the lads adapting to different styles during training. So the coaching staff seems to be working on some different tactical plans this week. Bruce had reportedly experimented with a two striker system last week but opted against it for Selhurst Park.
However, on the back of two defeats, his hand may be forced to implement some of these changes this weekend.
