Tomorrow Newcastle travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. It’s the first time Newcastle have reached this stage of the competition in the Ashley era. In 2006, the Magpies reach the sixth round before being knocked out by Chelsea.
Similarly to that season, the draws have been very favorable in the third and fourth rounds this year. Though it took replays for Newcastle to get past both Rochdale and Oxford.
They now face the Championship leaders who have a six-point cushion over third-placed Fulham. The Baggies’ main concern this season will be promotion, and they stumbled a bit this past weekend by losing to Wigan at home.
That loss ended a six-game unbeaten run in which West Brom collected 16 points. So the loss on Saturday may have a bearing on West Brom boss Slaven Bilic’s plans for Tuesday.
Steve Bruce will have plenty of options tomorrow with only Andy Carroll, Emil Krafth, and Ciaran Clark likely to be unavailable. Hopefully, Allan Saint-Maximin will be able to start after playing only around 15 minutes against Burnley due to his hamstring injury.
Newcastle have a great opportunity to get to the quarterfinals tomorrow. However, they’ll have to find a way to put the ball into the back of the net which they haven’t done in four straight games.
