This morning Newcastle fans were treated to some excellent news with the announcement that both Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey had extended their contracts to 2023.
Matt and Jonjo were the first senior Magpies to sign new deals since Martin Dubravka penned his in October to keep the Slovakian at Tyneside until 2025.
However, that was not the only positive update with contracts that was revealed on Friday morning. Steve Bruce also confirmed that Federico Fernandez has a year’s extension that if triggered, will keep him at Newcastle until 2021.
This is what Steve Bruce said when asked about both Fernandez and Javier Manquillo:
“We’re hoping that we can sit down with them. I think Fede’s got an option for another year. He’s been terrific. I gave him a rest the other night.
“So over the next few weeks, we’ll address what we have to address and sit down with the different individuals. Of course, we need to get a couple of results quickly cause that’ll make it easier for everyone concerned if we know where we are going to be next year.”
So Newcastle still have some time to work out something longer term with the Argentine. We would imagine that they will trigger his extension at some point before the summer.
The other bit of news to emerge is that Karl Darlow may not be out of contract this summer, as previously reported. The Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth has tweeted the following update on Darlow’s contract situation.
Update: Understand that Karl Darlow is under contract until 2021. Newcastle never disclosed his original contract length (and club has not revealed any extension) but it had been widely reported that his contract expired this summer. #nufc
— Miles Starforth (@milesstarforth) March 6, 2020
Karl is still on the contract he signed in 2014 when he joined from Nottingham Forest along with Jamaal Lascelles. However, both Karl and Jamaal went back to Forest on loan for one season before coming to Tyneside in the summer of 2015.
It seems somewhat unlikely that Darlow would have signed a seven-year deal when Newcastle first bought him. However, there could be a scenario where he signed a six-year contract that started when he came back from his loan spell in 2015.
Starforth doesn’t elaborate with any specific details on his report. So it is all conjecture on how his deal is structured.
However, if true, that would be excellent news as Darlow could remain as Martin Durbravka’s back-up next season. Newcastle would then have three quality goalkeepers in Dubravka, Darlow, and Freddie Woodman on the books for next season.
How Will Newcastle Fare Against Southampton On Saturday?
- Win (45%, 703 )
- Loss (29%, 458 )
- Draw (26%, 405 )

Comment #3The cup results are spoiling us a bit, we start getting optimistic about upcoming games.
Not me, I reckon we’ll only win by two clear goals.
Now that’s sensible and realistic!

I read your post, I think situations like that do get leaked out of the dressing, it’s hard to contain them in the twitter age, I’m pretty sure we’d know if there was a problem with Muto.
I believe that the various managers just weren’t prepared to give him a chance for football reasons but goodness knows what they might be.

Comment #8Frog, you keep doing this you prat. When people are talking about football you have to jump in with your pointless posts about Ashley. You did it the other day as well. I know you are clueless about football and must be feeling left out but people come here as a rule to talk football.
I’ll leave you to it. Paranoia – blog destroyer. Later

Comment #11Wasn’t one of the problems Muto had something to do with him struggling with adjusting to England. Then there is the mystery of what his position is. I think it’s a shame he hasn’t had a decent run but these things happen.

I always struggle with the saying ”he’s never been given a run in the team” if it’s just one manager then I get it, maybe one doesn’t fancy him or they’ve had an argument, but when it’s two and three managers there has to be a reason why they’re not being given a run.

I think that was the problemRafa had with Mbemba, maybe after he tried to bollick him after that OG, he just shrugged and said no speak English and walked off, that would boil your pi$$.

I agree he hasn’t been given a run by either manager, it’s an odd one. He was highly regarded in Germany.
I think you’re right about Mbemba, but that for me is the biggest problem with Rafa, if he fell out with a player for any reason that was it, no way back. That said I’d have him back yesterday.

Comment #19These players, Gayle, Muto, Saivet etc will probably do a Colback.
We’ll do a deal with an interested club on the fee, but the player will scupper it by not taking a pay drop.
Might just have to send them out on loan

Comment #24Hayden and Yedlin, both mid 20’s, experienced premier league players and have not been gash, must be worth around the 10 million mark.
Schar must be 10-15 mill maybe.
Money for Gayle, Muto, Atsu etc if they can sell them.
Add all that to the money that was available in January to spend and what becomes available in summer from tv money.
That’ll be a canny war chest for Bruce. We just need to stay up I suppose!

New contracts for Ritchie 34 and Shelvey 31. Shelvey on 80k a week.

Comment #36Shelvey has to play Hollywood balls because he cannot run. Stuck in the D most of game. Totally immobile and cannot tackle.
7 goals in 4 seasons and 7 assists. That’s less than two a season .
And he is our playmaker on 80k getting a contract extension at 31.
Only at the toon.
Bodes well for next season
