Gayle, Hayden, And Ritchie Get Starts At Southampton

This is the team Steve Bruce has named for today’s match at Southampton. It has six changes from the win over West Brom.

Bruce will continue with four at the back with Federico Fernandez in for Fabian Schar. It’s almost the same team that drew 0-0 against Burnley last weekend. However, Allan Saint-Maximin comes in for Joelinton.

Both Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie get the nods at striker and right wing while Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden return to the midfield. It’s a very strong bench with Joelinton and Valentino Lazaro available if necessary.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has selected the following team for Southampton.

Newcastle haven’t hit the back of the net for four straight in the Premier League. However, they put three by West Brom on Tuesday evening.

Hopefully, that will spark the lads in front of goal this afternoon at St Mary’s.

No Matty Longstaff, Florian Lejeune or Christian Atsu in the #NUFC squad. Not sure if any are injured but Bruce didn’t mention that yesterday. With a largely fit squad, Bruce has choices to make & so likely most left out rather than because they’re injured #NUFC #saintsfc #SOUNEW

Yeah I’d agree with your point.

It’s still a pretty good bench.

Good team selection. Altho Joel did well on Tuesday, really put himself about and made some clear chances.

Joel and Lozaro to come off the bench in 2nd half.

    2-0 to us.

Shane Long won 14 aerial duels in his last game against Newcastle. No way can Long be allowed to carry that on.

Right, football. Good lineup. Personally I’d have gone for Lazarro ahead of Ritchie, but we can change that when and where if necessary.
Definitely attacking so looking forward to it. Gayle needs to score today to show he should be in ahead of Joe. So far he’s offered nothing.

    Catchy

    From previous

I’m not assuming, the club do not communicate with fans.

The owner has admitted himself that he shouldn’t own a football club, so why not get in some people who do know the game, surely it would benefit him more.

Let’s be fair to Bruce, he couldn’t change it until Jonjo and Gayle were fit. And it takes time to change things after years of playing one way. Fair play to Bruce for having a go.

Droppy, billionaires are generally ruthless businessmen with huge egos, so I don’t know why people even expect him to listen to us. He never will, but like it or not – and I don’t like it, I just don’t kid myself I can change it – he bought the club and he’ll run it his way, even if it means running it into the ground. Although, he’s not really. We’re a PL team and in the quarter finals. Long time since we’ve had that, agreed?

Absolutely ludicrous decision playing Ritchie, takes all the pace away on one side.. Makes us unbalanced.. Oh and plus the obvious all Ritchie is good for is the occasional decent delivery

Jail, yep, I checked on your team and saw you played your bench boost. As you say, a double game week would be the way to go.

I used up bench boost, triple captain, and free hit in game week 1,2 and 3. Likely not the best tactical choice, but I figured it was important to try to get out in front early.

TomKaThor, couldn’t agree more. Lazarro can keep up if we break, whereas Ritchie, as much as I love his enthusiasm, isn’t the quickest across the turf. Maybe Bruce is thinking we won’t be breaking but will campion their half? Now now, don’t laugh. 😀

Interesting and brave team selection from Bruce.

He’s obviously not too bothered about keeping Lazaro and Bentaleb sweet to sign after their loan deals.

We’ll miss Jo’s defensive headers but let’s hope Gayle compensates with a goal or two.
