Newcastle Star Earns Place In Analyst’s Team Of The Week

BBC football analyst Garth Crooks, who turns 62 today, has selected Allan Saint-Maximin for his Team of the Week for last weekend’s Premier League matches.

Saint-Maximin, of course, saved Newcastle from a very disappointing draw with his 79th-minute goal, which was his third of the season.

Here is the former Stoke City and Spurs forward’s take on Allan’s performance at St Mary’s:

This lad terrorized Southampton. The Saints simply couldn’t cope with his pace. While Saint-Maximin was carving his way through the Southampton defence, Dwight Gayle was missing chances set up by the Frenchman with alarming regularity.

In the end Saint-Maximin decided to do it all himself and created his own chance… and converted it – aided by Southampton’s Yann Valery. Why the defender needed two touches and more time to clear the danger than it takes VAR to check an offside I don’t know. But it cost his team the match.

This is a very apt description of the events from Saturday afternoon. Saint-Maximin was determined to pull Newcastle to victory. He did just that with a brilliant individual effort for the game-winner.

Here are some of Allan’s stats from his performance on Saturday.

Hope our defence doesn’t get caught short of bodies against SHU with our newfound attack mindedness; particularly since our midfield is still not clicking.

Seems some people just come on here to moan about other posters and start an argument.

I’m hoping Gayle gets another start as striker this weekend, he missed some chances but at least he was in the place to miss them – he’ll score soon enough with more game time

I’d start both Lazarro and Gayle. Not entirely convinced about Danny Rose though, looks lethargic and can’t be bothered, as if he’s going through the motions.

However as I don’t think we have a better option there:-

    Manq, Fede, Lascelles, Rose
    Hayden, Shelvey, Lazarro
    Almiron ASM

Funny because before Saint Maxs goal I thought it was his worst performance for us.

Joelinton’s movement outside the box is fine. It’s his movement inside the box that needs work. He is not the player to sniff out chances. However, earlier in the season there were hardly any chances to sniff out and very little quality service.

He actually makes a lot of runs outside the box but never receives the balls he wants and you often see him annoyed by it. Lazaro after the WBA game said openly that his runs made the space for him and almiron to get in the box. The first goal v WBA for eg doesn’t happen without the movement of Joelinton dragging a defender, stretching the defence and create the space for Almiron to run onto the ASM pass.

I’d give Gayle another game v sheff wed like. But it will be good to see games in the PL where joelinton starts and has more bodies around him.

Keep seeing this reported £350m valuation Ashley apparently has for the club. We don’t have any idea, the papers have no idea. Each year it is different. Sometimes it’s been £300m reported, other times as high as £400m.

Similarly the past few years Ashley has gone from selling the club, to keeping the club back to selling the club.

So many mixed messages then you wonder what is actually going on, does he want to sell, what is the price that is putting off the reportedly high number of potential suitors.

My stance has always been, barring the Staveley takeover episode, that he does not want to sell. The club was bought as a vehicle to promote sports direct according to John Hall. The minute this changes or is affected then he is not going anywhere unless he gets someone willing to overpay a great amount.

Speaking of promoting sports direct, Ashley will love that we have got the Saturday evening bbc slot. Great audience reaching far and wide, likely with a packed a stadium and good atmosphere. Oh and all those tacky signs scattered everywhere!

Joe was dragging defs away when he hit that backheel. Micky I agree on Laz and Gayle and hoping game time sharpens them up. Rose is a poser a few nice touches but he looks like he would rather be at the chippie.

    I’d give up posting BS.

If Ashley was pi$$ing every buyer off with BS and smokescreens it would have come out by now – but not a peep.

And that’s nothing at all to do with NDA’s because they don’t stop you from spilling the beans on the ducking and diving he’s been accused of.

To me, the simple fact is nobody has offered the £350M that he wants and the BS and smokescreens have come from chancer buyers. MBS obviously has the money to buy but Staveley hasn’t persuaded him to cough up.

Consortium’s can involve different people with different agenda’s and trying to pull one off for the type of money involved in buying NUFC and then the ongoing multi-million investment needed is not going to be easy.

It’s far more likely IMO that we’ll be bought by an individual and that a deal will be done with little or no press speculation.

If Ashley gets his £350M I’m convinced he’ll sell And if the deal involves him keeping advertising right at SJP, and paying the market rate, it wouldn’t bother me.

I just hope when we are sold we get a genuine full on hugely ambitious owner with mega deep pockets.

you said earlier a top manager wouldnt allow his team to take the foot off the pedal.
just take a quick look at the top 4
    Klopps Liverpool have
    Rodgers Leicester have.
As soon as Leicester were more of less assured of champions league place and couldnt win the league they went off the boil as youd expect them to if you were a betting man.

almost every team in history with nothing to play for takes their foot off the pedal. id bet fergies teams have been guilty. peps bayern did. i could go on and name every great manager.

Just FYI the secret formula to non-argumentative blogging is clearly to not talk about nufc or football even. The Nightshift have it down to a tee probably because being slightly disconnected from local goings on and probably also only having the blog as their news source they have nothing to chat about except their old concert reminiscences.

However in the daytime there seems to be a determined effort by some to get a rise out of regular fans by making inflammatory asides and then retreating once the touch paper is lit.

“Welsh Geordie” a mischievous Swansea fan and utter creep only ever posts such remarks in order to create or continue bad blood. Not one constructive thing comes from there.

Munster is rumbled now, he’s backed himself right into a corner trying to play the victim – using the anti- Irish card freely of course. He always makes a statement about Benitez because he knows that the majority of fans do not agree with his specious views on what was our best manager for years. But he’s been helped into that corner by being completely silent on the pitiful performance (as expected) of Bruce but doing star jumps and cheering on the rare wins. And then of course to get the reaction going he has to name – drop all those he knows will speak up about his stupid claims.

That’s the sort of stuff that starts arguments.

    I totally disagree.

Lpoll had to lose sometime – no foot off the pedal.

And Leicester slumped when Vardy went 6 weeks without a goal and the got injured.

Try telling Villa their foot was off the pedal last night.

You quoted my words as there being “no pro-Ashley chat” on the nightshift.

For reasons best known to yourself, you then ask me to name the pro-Ashley posters.

Don’t you think the Blog’s better without arguments?

I think the blog’s better without fake news like the ‘pro-Ashley’ posters on the day shift – that’s what you meant.

None on the night shift obviously means you see it on the day shift.

I’m not looking for an argument – you made the claim, I’m just asking you to back it up.
