Report – Premier League Matches Will Not Be Played Behind Closed Doors ‘As Things Stand’

On Saturday, Sky News put out a report about the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport having a meeting on Monday to put plans in place for different scenarios involving the coronavirus.

The meeting was held in London, and the Mirror have published some details of what was discussed.

They are reporting that Premier League clubs have been told to make plans for the potential of future games being played to empty stadiums. However, at the moment, that course of action is not necessary.

This is the statement released from the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport:

“Based upon the current scientific advice from the Government’s medical experts, there is no rationale to close or cancel sporting events as things stand.

“We will remain in regular dialogue with sports governing bodies and broadcasters, ensuring they are in receipt of the most up to date guidance from the health authorities.”

So as of now, Newcastle’s match this weekend against Sheffield United at St James Park will be unaffected. That should also be the case for the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on the following Saturday.

Earlier on Monday, French authorities restricted attendance for Ligue 1 matches to just 1,000 fans until April 15th. This will also affect the Champions League match between PSG and Dortmund scheduled for Wednesday in Paris.

Italy now faces a country-wide quarantine due to a recent surge in coronavirus cases. Some matches in Serie A had to be played behind closed doors over the past few weeks.
