Newcastle have been linked with 23-year-old Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos this season, who has played 6 times for Colombia.
Morelos moved from Finnish club HJK on a three-year deal to Rangers back in June 2017 for a fee thought to be around £1M.
In two seasons in Finland, he scored 46 goals in 62 games, and while at Rangers, he has scored 77 goals in 177 games for Rangers.
So this lad can score goals, but the Veikkausliiga – the Premier division of Finnish football – and the Scottish Premiership League are nowhere near the quality of the English Premier League.
The Veikkausliiga is not ranked in the top 78 football leagues in the world while the Scottish Premiership is ranked 15 and the English Premier League is ranked number one,
Here are the rankings from last season.
Morelos’ goalscoring record given the class of the opposition seems medium to good.
Newcastle certainly need a player who is a natural striker, and Morelos (shown above) seems to be just that.
He is a very athletic player and can play up front on his own or with another striker.
Morelos works very hard for the team, and he would seem to be able to fit easily into the Newcastle set-up.
There’s a report in the Chronicle today that his disciplinary record is not particularly good with 7 red cards in Scotland.
This is what Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has said about his player:
“He’s in a good place, he’s enjoying his football, and he’s behaving himself,” “
“He was even shaking the referee by the hand on the way off, so he’s definitely trying!”
We’re not sure how much Rangers will ask for their players and that – as usual – may be the deciding factor at Newcastle.
We would like to see two out-and-out strikers signed this summer to ensure our weakness over the last three seasons – the inability to score goals – is remedied once and for all.
