This past January Newcastle brought in a couple of youngsters to boost their Academy. We signed 16-year-old Reagan Thomson from Queen’s Park and brought in Stan Flaherty, who was not offered a contract at Arsenal.
Flaherty had been on trial with Newcastle in October before deciding to join during the winter window. Newcastle fended off both Celtic and Rangers to capture Thomson, a Scotland U17 international. Both midfielders linked up with Newcastle’s U18 team.
Newcastle also brought in three free agents in the summer for the U23 team in Kyle Scott, Jake Turner, and Ludwig Francillette. We expect this trend to continue this summer with the club adding a couple of promising youngsters.
Calum Kavanagh– Newcastle tracking promising forward
The Sun are reporting that Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs chasing Middlesbrough forward Calum Kavanagh. Celtic are also said to be tracking the 16-year-old.
Kavanagh is being pursued by some of the Premier League’s elite with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Leicester City being linked. So Newcastle have their work cut out for them if they want to land the young striker.
Kavanagh is the son of former Ireland international Graham Kavanagh, who also played at Middlesbrough in the early 90s. He had a stint with Sunderland in the mid-2000s but only made 14 first-team appearances, spending much of his time out on loan.
The younger Kavanagh is currently a Republic of Ireland U17 international and has scored 6 goals in 13 appearances for the Middlesbrough U18s this term. He can play as a striker or on the left-wing and looks a promising prospect despite his father’s questionable pedigree. 🙂
