With the holdup of the Premier League season and its possible cancelation due to the coronavirus pandemic, Premier League clubs will be under some financial pressures this summer.
But they will be nothing like the pressures on the smaller clubs – some of whom could go bankrupt due to the cessation of money flow into the club.
It’s an unfortunate state of affairs for those smaller clubs – the lifeblood of football in England.
But back to the Premier League – and because of the shortage of money, it’s clear that free agents – those out of contract this summer, will be in strong demand.
We used to call them free transfers, but there’s nothing free with transfers these days.
The players get a signing-on fee and the agent’s fees seem to keep growing … and growing.
The Athletic have a report out today saying that Newcastel are after three free agents.
They’re said to be monitoring Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud, Adam Lallana of Liverpool (shown above), and Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser.
We were interested in Giroud when he was still at Montpelier before he signed for Arsenal in 2012, and in Adam Lallana when he was at Southampton, and before Liverpool signed him back in 2014.
The three players are all highly rated by Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, and all three would be good signings for us.
But given the intense competition from bigger and more ambitious clubs, it’s difficult to see Newcastle attracting any of those three to Tyneside this summer.
Let’s hope that’s not the case because we need better players signed this summer.
