Keith Downie has had a Q&A on the Newcastle takeover, and he has published a report of that on Sky Sports – it’s interesting what Keith says.
There have been some reports lately on what will happen to Steve Bruce and whether he will keep his job as the manager.
But the Amanda Staveley consortium have spent a lot of time and money acquiring Newcastle United and will likely want their own manager to come in.
It’s much like when Mike Ashley acquired the club back in summer 2007 (dread the day), and the existing manager at the time, Sam Allardyce didn’t last too long.
He was fired in January of the following year, even though Newcastle were in mid-table at the time.
Kevin Keegan took over and then resigned in September 2008 after the owner did the dirty on him.
Kevin Keegan has been awarded £2m plus interest the following year when an independent arbitration panel found he was constructively dismissed by Newcastle the previous September.
Constructive dismissal is when an employer creates a hostile work environment, and because of that, the resignation is not truly voluntary and is really a termination.
Anyway, one effect of that was that we were relegated May 2009 – Mike Ashley’s second season in charge.
🙁
And it was all downhill from there: the two bright spots were that we were promoted at the first attempt the two times we were relegated under Mike Ashley.
Keith Downie was asked about Steve Bruce:
“It will be harsh on Steve Bruce, who has done a solid job given the circumstances in which he arrived last summer.”
“But it’s pretty clear that the new owners would want their own man in charge to start a new chapter at the club.”
“Much of this will depend on what happens with the remainder of the season and how quickly they can complete the takeover.”
“If this does happen, Bruce can leave with his head held high as he’s managed a tricky situation well.”
We agree with Keith on that – Steve’s star has risen while he’s been at Newcastle, and he will be in demand if and when he leaves his home town club.
Bruce will not be short of job offers, that’s for sure.
If Steve doesn’t stay, then the next question is who would they bring in to manage Newcastle.
This is our active poll on which of four potential managers the fans would want.
Comments welcome.

IF (I’m hopeful but refuse to fully believe until it happens) the takeover goes through, whose idea / want was it to renew Shelvey and Ritchie’s contracts?
If it’s the current regime it would imply they didn’t expect to sell. If the next regime it indicates that perhaps it’s not Rafa who they will appoint as Jonjo barely got a look in under Rafa.

Rafa vs Poch might be more in favour of Rafa than you think.
Rafa last major trophy as manager being Europa League champion in 2013 and Coppa Italia 2014. No that long ago.
For all his accolades Poch has yet to win any honours as a manager unless you count manager of the month.
So when we say Rafa’s coaching abilities are dated, I don’t know if that is supported by results. The level of entertainment can certainly be challenged though.
That said I think Poch would be a good choice as manager or head coach and I would probably favor him over Rafa for bringing young players through the first team and his aggressive style, although perhaps naive. His CL final performance with Spurs vs Liverpool was very poor. He should have had Spurs ready for the match and they were nowhere near.
So unless Poch got significant results early in hos tenure i.e. champs league place or FA cup I think he’d be replaced within 3 years.
Allegri vs Rafa would be closer argument.
Allegri having the many Serie A and Coppa Italia trophies with Juve. You can say he won because of the financial might of Juve but then again you had to be good enough to get the job in the first place.
Those who want Allegri over Rafa might be surprised that the tactics might look similar. I wouldn’t complain about Allegri though. Be happy to see him with a Newcastle black and white tie on.
For me to consider Rafa is a bit more about seeing what could have been with a more supportive ownership. But to me it seems too much looking backward.

Comment #6I think we should keep him for half time entertainment, we could put him in giant goals dressed in a jester outfit and for every goal you put past him you get to throw a custard pie at his face.

Comment #7IF a new manager is brought in after this season I would offer Bruce a role in the coaching team as Asst. I was gutted when we appointed him but if you look at his reign with anything approaching a fair mind you would say he’s done a damn fine job. No goal scorer, ridiculous injuries, fans against him from day one, constant takeover talk.
The starry eyed Rafa brigade – who I rated highly overall – rush to make excuses for his failings (defensive tactics, very very streaky form) but won’t give Bruce a flicker of credit with a clearly weaker hand – and even chalk his excellent wins up as ‘lucky’.

Lads. The situation hasnt changed from Wednesday or Thursday.
Buyers side say price agreed. PL checks are the advanced stage (at which – my understanding – is a Sales Purchase Agreement has been signed). No word from MA yet on whether price agreed.

Comment #9Ed, Neil, we missed a manager of the list.
I’m wondering if the buyers have looked at or even talked to KK on the hush, hush.
I would also ask fans what would they think if KK came back to manage.
Me for one would love to see KK, could he do it again and make people quake with the thought of coming to St James.

Comment #10Bruce has already left the north east he wont be back,
I think people need to be looking beyond that list of potential managers/coaches , i think on the football side a director of football will be the first appointment,

Comment #11I love the way everyone outside of Newcastle keeps spouting on about the FFP rules. We have consistently made a profit when in the Premier League. No-one else does. Our revenue streams are virtually limited to TV monies and gate receipts and more less have not grown in 13 years.. Just about every other method of raising finance within a club is under exploited at NUFC. The opportunities to expand the business are unique. Virtually no-one except tourists (no offence) buy club merchandise.
The new jersey for next season will sell millions, immediately, if Ashley is gone. How much will that put in to the club? Advertising revenue will explode. In fact every revenue stream will increase exponentially almost overnight.
One thing we can thank Ashley for is that his prudence will allow the new owners to have a big splash, without falling foul of the FFP legislation.
