It was three weeks ago when the news emerged that the Premier League had received paperwork from both Newcastle and the Amanda Staveley-led consortium regarding the potential takeover of the club.
While an agreement on price wouldn’t be reached for another couple of weeks, it was a welcome sign that progress was being made.
At that time, Chris Waugh in the Athletic broached the idea of Lee Charnley being retained if the club was sold. This is what he wrote in his report:
New owners would likely keep Charnley, at the very least for the interim, to provide continuity, though it is understood that a chief executive would be sought should this deal happen.
There is a new report today from Football Insider that makes the same claim as Waugh did three weeks ago.
The latest report claims that the new ownership group have asked Charnley to remain in his position in the interim.
Charnley has been Newcastle’s managing director for six years but has spent many more years at the club. He’ll be able to provide the new ownership group with a lot of insight into a variety of aspects with the club.
Since he has represented Newcastle during the Premier League meetings on the coronavirus, he could be a valuable asset in helping the club prepare for the return of football this season.
The report doesn’t say whether they think Charnley will accept this request to stay on. However, he could provide some continuity in the interim once the Newcastle takeover is completed.

Comment #6It’s no surprise that the likes of Jail are saying only CV has forced MA’s hand to sell.
That’s a load of bollix.
These negotiations and the agreement – when it first broke – were BEFORE the CV pandemic.
The £17M deposit was 5% of the original £340M agreed price which has now been reduced to £300M because of CV.
So…
Ashley HAS changed the goalposts…
He agreed to reduce the price.
That’s not me cheerleading Ashley, just stopping furious backtracking and BS getting in the way of facts.

Comment #7Did The Slug not keep Freddy on for a few month when he took over?
Combine that with the fact Penfold will know where the biscuits are hidden

Comment #8If Charnley were to leave then he’d probably have a severance package including non-disclosure clauses so no speaky.
If he stays in the same position then he knows the combination to the safe and the papers inside. That would be useful to his new employer.
If he reigns and does an expose deal with a Sunday newspaper then that’s his Brucie bonus so to speak.
Choices choices choices

If there were any dodgy dealings and money pilfered away it would have surely been picked up when the consortium looked at the books.
I’ve no doubt PIF have lawyers and accountants streets ahead of what almost any other buyer could afford.
MA may have been frugal with transfer money but we’ve had two relegations and loss of Prem income + players have been bought with cash upfront without borrowings.
Other clubs – the world over – have borrowed to fund transfers which is why so many of them are in the brown stuff now – but NUFC aren’t.
IMO pilfering and double dealing money out of the club is just another myth about MA.
He may have been a lousy owner, but a criminal – I doubt it.

I cant believe I’m backing jail up here but I actually agree with him and a few others the C V is the reason why he sold the club.
Lock at the actual timeline, they have been in discussions for a long time and let’s not forget it was going nowhere. No doubt they will still have been in talks behind the scenes the virus lockdown has forced his hand though

Of the first meetings which have just taken place concerning the future coach of Newcastle, 4 names would be in the shortlist:
– Rafa Benitez
– Mauricio Pochettino
– Massimiliano Allegri
– Lucien Favre

Comment #19People seem to overlook that Lee Charnley worked for the club long before Mike Ashley arrived and has a lot of know-how, plus a reputation as a skilled negotiator. Rafa always seemed to rate him and his dialogue with the owner such as it was was with Lee Charnley. The PIF/Staveley group will see his strengths and will keep him on board. Charnley inevitably showed loyalty to Mike Ashley whilst he worked for him, but he has been made to look feeble at times by Ashley, which is not actually his fault – my expectation is that he has a deeper loyalty to the club.

Comment #20They’ll keep Charnley long enough to find out bits and pieces and answer some unknown questions. Then he’ll probably have to go for his “induction” at the Saudi embassy where he’ll probably tell them where all the fckin money went!

I suspect Charnley’s loyalties lie with the guys paying his wages, whoever they are. He ain’t getting a job like the one he’s got now anywhere else!

Comment #22It’s the usual business succession plan. Charnley (as much as you may dislike him) is the incumbent Chairman and as such has information about running the club that needs to be passed on to the new executives.
It’s not remarkable and you could have predicted this for any potential takeover, but he won’t be there for long.
