Newcastle’s links to players have come at lightning pace as the Premier League gets deeper into its owners’ and directors’ tests. It seems each day, at least a couple of class players are added to a growing list.
We’ve even seen some players like Lyon’s Moussa Dembele and Ajax’s Donny van de Beek, who have been scouted in the past, come back into vogue.
One player who we know Newcastle have coveted is Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare. We had a ÂŁ35m bid plus add-ons accepted for the 21-year-old this past January only for Soumare to turn the move down.
Reports in the subsequent months claimed that Newcastle had not ended their pursuit of the French U21 international. As the summer window loomed ahead, Newcastle were still trying to convince the midfielder to come to Tyneside.
We haven’t heard too much over the past month on the Frenchman as a new ownership group inches ever closer to taking over Newcastle.
Today, Football Insider are reporting that another move for Soumare will not be launched by the new ownership group.
According to the report, the new owners will look to work on transfers from their own list of targets and not the current one compiled during the past few seasons.
However, we’re not sure that Soumare is a target that will be cast aside after the takeover. He’s being pursued by the like of Liverpool and Real Madrid and has the potential to become a world-class midfielder.
Lille are also ready to cash in on their prized asset and were disappointed that Soumare turned Newcastle down in January.
The groundwork has already been done for this transfer. With Newcastle becoming a far more enticing proposition under this Saudi-backed consortium, convincing Soumare to join shouldn’t prove difficult.
However, he’ll not be considered a top target as Newcastle should have plenty of options to bring in a midfielder this summer.

Comment #3Good morning everyone, lets hope we hear some really positive news today.
I was hoping Soumare would be one of our main priorities for next season but does,nt seem to be the case. Who is making these decisions? Bruce? I doubt that very much

Comment #4I’m sure whoever becomes manager they will have their own targets in mind, not those of the press who masquerade as ITK specialists, who in fact know 2/3 of 5/8ths F.A! Lets hope they announce today.

Comment #6Where would this information/story have come from? The present incumbents? Why would they know what any new owners have planned? The incoming regime? They aren’t even over the line yet so why would they give out such information? Until/when there is new ownership who are ready to talk to the press… nobody knows anything. Anyone disagree?
