The Sun’s Charlie Wyett is reporting that Newcastle will be amongst just five Premier League clubs with a significant transfer budget this summer.
Newcastle set to join Man Utd and Chelsea as one of just five big-spending clubs if takeover completed. Most Premier League won’t have any cash this summer https://t.co/fkAHAuW9j3
— Charlie Wyett (@CharlieWyett) April 30, 2020
The other four are the usual suspects – the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
The economic impact of the coronavirus is expected to cause transfer fees and wages to significantly drop this summer.
However, many Premier League clubs were in dire financial shape even before the pandemic. So they’ll have to tread very cautiously in the transfer market this summer.
In early April, there were reports detailing the dreadful state of most Premier League clubs finances.
Newcastle are not amongst those clubs so when our new owners take control they will have plenty of room to maneuver in the transfer market.
Recent reports suggest the Saudi-backed ownership group will invest £200m into the club with some of that going to the transfer budget.
This pandemic could see some clubs on the brink of catching the elites of English football suffer setbacks. One of those is Leicester City, who are comfortably in third place in the standings at the moment.
The Foxes were expected to heavily invest in the squad this summer. However, the economic fallout from the coronavirus has impacted their owners’ financial situation.
Another club that will be impacted is Everton, though according to the Sun, they could still spend big this summer if Financial Fair Play regulations are softened.
Once this takeover is announced, Newcastle stand to be in an excellent position heading into this summer.
The new owners will inherit a club in good financial shape while the Saudi wealth fund, PIF, have continued to invest even during the coronavirus outbreak.

This is driving me mad.
We have half the media talking about which manager we’re bringing in and spending hundreds of millions.
The other half saying the deal is in big trouble of being blocked.
The more this goes on the more I’m losing confidence.

Comment #3tom, that BBC article is incorrect in its very first paragraph
“A potential Saudi Arabian-led takeover of Newcastle United has come under intense scrutiny, particularly about the country’s human rights record, but will that matter to the Premier League?”
This is not a Saudi-Arabian led takeover, it’s been led and facilitated by Amanda Staveley but with the financial backing of the Saudi Arabia Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Not once does that article mention the involvement of the very definitely British Staveley or the Jewish Reuben brothers. It’s completely one-sided and implies that the NUFC fans either don’t care about or are are ignorant of the facts. It’s completely one sided.
I’ve half a mind to complain, absolutely shocking piece of propaganda.

Comment #6Can anyone back up the statement on the previous thread about the police being told it’s tomorrow? I’ll admit all my assumed dates were calculated guesses, but this was a definite statement, I’d like to know it’s voracity, or is it more sh**e from a WUM?

Comment #7PSG have been crowned champions with a 12 point lead, I think the same should happen here, finish the season and give it Liverpool… If it was only a few point I would say no.. But there was no way anyone was catching them

Comment #10Rob – viking settlers intermarried with the French and by the year 1000, they were no longer viking pagans, but French speaking Christians. Or were we not English but Anglo – Saxon?

Comment #14‘Geordie is such a distinctive dialect because of the Vikings’. I mean, it’s obvious, isn’t it? The Geordies say yem or hyem for ‘home’ and oot for ‘out’, and so do the Danes and Norwegians (hjem, ute/ud). The Geordies say bairn for ‘child’ and lop for ‘flea’, the Danes and Norwegians say barn and loppe.

Comment #20ROBLEENIO this part is better …
Will the Saudis pass the test?
If that all sounds like a compelling case for failure, it might be worth considering some of those who have passed the owners’ and directors’ test in recent history.
Human rights groups wrote to the Premier League when former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra took over as owner of Manchester City in 2007, accusing him of being a “human rights abuser of the worst kind”.
Thaksin’s lawyer, Noppadol Pattama, told BBC Sport at the time that the allegations were completely unfounded.
“The civil and human rights charges against him have never been proven,” said Noppadol. “My client deserves to be treated as an innocent man, until proven guilty.
“So far there hasn’t been any solid evidence against him.”
The key point in the Premier League’s eyes, however, is that he had not been found guilty of those allegations when he took charge. After he left the club, he was charged with corruption and he denied any wrongdoing.
City’s current Abu Dhabi owners, who replaced Thaksin in 2008, have also been accused of whitewashing their country’s human rights record. They passed the test with no apparent problems.
A source familiar with previous decisions told BBC Sport the takeover is likely to go through because the Premier League cannot act as moral arbiter on owners. It will only base its verdict on infringements that have been proven.
It will be difficult to reach that threshold with many of the allegations levelled at Saudi Arabia, and the case against the Newcastle takeover is not helped by the UK government’s trade deals with the country.
Culture secretary Oliver Dowden said the takeover was a matter for the Premier League, so a government intervention is unlikely.
Replying to Fair/Square’s letter, Masters said he could not comment on the ongoing process of the prospective takeover, but added: “I can assure you that these processes go beyond those required by UK company law and they are applied with equal rigour to every prospective purchase of a Premier League club.”

Comment #21tom, it’s disgusting, throws out an easy stat without actually giving it any context and makes us out to be thoughtless morons with no ability to consider the very real moral ambiguity around this.
Shocking article – and what it’s doing on the sports pages when it’s a political diatribe I have no idea.
