The Chronicle are reporting the Newcastle takeover remains on track: that’s even though there have been some disturbing reports this week.
Maybe the biggest of this week was the Sun report that said Mike Ashley was getting fed up and annoyed that the Premier League owners’ and directors’ test was taking so long.
Al he wants is the money transferred to his won bank account, which he expected to happen two weeks ago.
Well, pity for him.
But in general, the news is still positive, and last Friday, there were reports the acquisition led my Ms. Amanfa Staveley could be announced this week.
It’s getting a bit late for that, but these things can happen at any time.
It just needs Newcastle to put on their website that they have been acquired by Amanda Staveley’s consortium, and some fans will take off into space.
These are some of the perceived problems and protests being made:
- Saudi Arabia’s terrible civil rights record
- The pirating of Premier League games by Saudi channel beoutQ
- The objection of at least 10 Premier League clubs (they are just jealous)
- A desperate personal plea from Jamal Khashoggi’s widow, “before it’s too late.”
The above points will not be taken into account during the owners’ and directors’ test.
That’s according to people close to the deal.
But until it goes through, we will remain on tenterhooks.
The Chronicle are telling us (again) there is no reason to panic, and the Premier League will take as long as they need before they OK the acquisition.
But it’s tough for Newcastle fans to stay patient over these last five weeks since the papers for he acquisition were submitted to the Premier League.
So once again, there’s really nothing new coming from the Chronicle – we just need to stay patient.
An that’s a lot easier said than done.
tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock – and so it goes on.
This could only happen at Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1George Watlin is part of a select committee, not an important member of the government.
Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary, has already said LIVE ON TV that the government WILL NOT get involved in this deal.
Well done Watlin, you’re famous on Twitter for a day!
This deal can’t be stopped, won’t be stopped and will be announced soon.

Comment #4Cant take what any Journo says seriously, they know as much as us, bugger all. to say we are on Tenterhooks over this takeover is an understatement.
CaptainAmerimag.
Your confidence and up beat attitude over the takeover is admirable but to suggest that the deal CANT be stopped is a tad naive. Ile salute you if you are proven right.

Comment #6For me there are only two tenuous snippets to hang on to to believe that a deal is being made.
The charge entry at Companies House
Ashley not denying it (I think after the disastrous PR following previous non-events would have prompted some sort of denial to squash it getting out of hand again).
None of the other stuff on the grapevine or from whatsisname from thingy who works as a whatchacallit with whoshecalledagain reckons his mate so-and-so, Lee Charnleys early learning counsellors brother in law holds any water at all.

Comment #7George Watlin’s committee has no relevance to the takeover. One can happen without the other, and will do so.
The Premier League have their own lawyers who are far more skilled and experienced in this field than a panel of nodding heads in Westminster ever could be.
The decision will NOT be held up by this.
Otherwise, what’s to stop the WI, National Trust, Royal Philharmonic and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band setting up their own committees to sit in judgement on this and ‘holding up the process’?

Comment #8Yawn! Wouldnt surprise me if the lawyers are the ones selectively leaking the information on very specific dates to prolong the whole process. The longer it goes on the more they get paid.

Comment #10The waiting is driving me crazy and I have to stop myself constantly checking the media for updates. It will happen when it happens, but it will happen. Despite all the noise, there’s nothing in the Directors and Owners Test that would allow them to lawfully withhold approval on any of the issues that have been raised. I understand that they want to be seen to be taking the process seriously, but they know they’re going to have to grant their approval sooner or later. I just wish they’d get on with it.

May 19th
that’s six months after Pochettino was sacked and his gardening leave period expires then before that date Levy and Spuds get a £12.5million compensation pay off.
Amanda isn’t going to piss away £12.5million to another club just for the matter of a few days, so will stay schtum until then and then come and open the gates to the Cathedral on the Hill, after breakfast.
Wednesday 20th May 2020 seems symmetricral.
20-05-20
Mind
15-05-20 has a good look about it as 15 plus 5 = 20
Early cans maybe

Comment #14Ed – you say the four points mentioned will “not be taken into account in the Owners’ and Directors’ Test”.
So why are the Premier League taking ‘as long as it needs’ to OK the purchase?
I think the re-start of the Premier League and the Coronavirus situation re Zoom meetings etc. holding everything up, are just poor excuses to keep Toon fans in purgatory.
Because let’s face it – no one outside our fan base wants this to go through smoothly… if at all.
I only hope that if/when this all goes through the Saudis remember all this and really stick it to everyone re loads of new exciting signings, ground, training and Academy improvements etc. etc.
If all the media (mischievously and often enviously and nastily) want us to be centre of attraction let’s make it on our terms … not theirs.

The Prem has to be seen to be giving due consideration to all the issues raised, particularly in relation to the human rights abuses. Truth be told, it’s currently irrelevant to the D & O Test but it’s clearly a touchy subject and must be dealt with sensitively. As for the 10 clubs who apparently have lodged objections, that’s just driven by fear and jealousy. It’s getting a little crowded at the top of the log now and some of the clubs that have got used to playing European football must be getting a bit jumpy. Of course, you forgot the one party that really wants this deal to go through – the Prem itself. They can’t wait for the arrival of more high profile players and the additional interest it creates in the league. Hold onto you hats everyone, the deal will happen.

Comment #22The PL won’t reject this takeover. I am increasingly confident of that for the following reasons:
1. There is little reason to reject it – all the ‘evidence’ is just hearsay, they have not been found guilty of any crime that would prevent them passing the tests.
2. The PL is about to encounter a HUGE recession in football due to COVID-19, rejecting this offer from the Saudis will mean missing out on HUGE investment into the League.
3. The PL will be wary that IF they turn down the Saudis two things could happen: 1. The Saudis drag them through the courts at HUGE cost to the PL. 2. The Saudis take their money to another league and turn that league into a global draw, diminishing the popularity of the PL.
4. The PL know very well that the accused piracy claims are likely to work in their favour longterm. Because the Saudis will want to demonstrate they are serious about clamping down on said pirates and do one of or both the following: A) stop the piracy, therefore causing more people to subscribe to said channels. B) The Saudis bid for the PL rights in the Middle East and therefore spark a bidding war with the current holders knowing full well the Saudis will happily pay more to have their new club (Newcastle) broadcast across the region.
I’m hopeful…. but we need to be patient.

Comment #33And as for those pundit’s spouting finish about Newcastle, that we will not attract the best players, they should listen to what Shelvey says about the club fans and the City. Let’s face it the players down South, getting robbed their homes broke into, they’ll all be wanting to play up here, not only for the money, but the way of life.

Comment #37Have you noticed how a single twitter comment or statement then gets picked up by paper after paper with the headline getting incrementally more sensational as the day goes on? – pure click bait rubbish. That comment re the commons committee, has now grown into a “major obstacle”, what absolute bollocks, god knows what modern journalists would do if they didn’t have Twitter to feed them their daily supply of ****, pick your own word guys and gals.

Comment #40People are trying their utmost to black ball the deal. The PL aren’t exactly pushing to rubber stamp the takeover, they are giving dissenters ample time to come up with a reason to block it. The PL should not have an indefinite time scale to make a decision. Enough is enough. They need to make a call and live with it one way or another. All this delay and delay shows them up to be incompetent rather than thorough in my view.
