‘It’s As We Were’ – George Caulkin Explains Last Night’s Twitter Flurry

John Richardson’s tweet that the Newcastle takeover had been given the go ahead set off a flurry of activity on Twitter yesterday.

His definition of imminent is a bit clearer in that it does not mean minutes or hours. Maybe it’ll be only a few more days or even later on today that we’ll get the news we’ve all been waiting for.

There was also a report in the Express yesterday evening that made a similar claim to Richardson.

It, too, said that the Premier League is thought to have given the takeover ‘the green light’ and that an announcement could be made in the next few days.

This is what the Express reported:

The Premier League are thought to have given Newcastle’s £300million Saudi-led takeover the green light and an official announcement could be made in the coming days, it is understood. A deal worth £300m was agreed between controversial current Magpies owner Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners, backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund and billionaire property investors the Reuben brothers.

Then late last night there was a Saudi news report about the takeover.

This led to a flurry of tweets under the #NUFC and #NUFCTakeover hashtags.

However, George Caulkin has verified that this report was just citing the Express and not adding any additional information.

So as Caulkin says, we’re still waiting for the official announcement from the Premier League. And it looks like that is going to happen very soon.

Ahhh and that’s burst my bubble.

I think most would agree Caulkin is the one journalist we all listen to. So to hear this, it’s deflated me. Might not be a bad thing.

Back in 2005, on Wednesday 9th Feb, my wife went into labour with our first child. Labour which lasted until Sunday 13th when my daughter was finally born. Up until now, that was the most protracted and wearisome experience of my life.

To be honest Caulkin throughout this has always urged patience.

Maybe he knows or doesn’t, maybe he has been asked to say nothing until formal announcement.

I’ll keep my hopes up as that tv station needs permission to run articles being state run. And I’m sure his brother on hearing the news phoned him straight away to find out the truth behind it.

“This is going to be a canny earner for Stavely – she’ll walk away with around 30 million once deal is completed”

To be fair, spread over the time it’s taken, it’s ‘only’ £10M per year!

This could have come from a leak at the PL or the Express have a mole. So yes they could be waiting for official confirmation but it doesn’t mean it’s not true or is that too optimistic?

RobLeenio @8 – I’ve always assumed her commission is the 10% in the club she will hold but as you say still about £30m – not bad work?

I think you are right. George is probably down playing it until the official announcement

Caulkin says confirmation from the premiere league,
Is is not that the premiere okay it and its either both sellers and buyers announce or just the buyers, the premiere league don’t announce anything.

I don’t read Arabic so can’t confirm the veracity but read this a little earlier this morn. 8.14am.

A Twitter post from the news channel, which is owned by the government and run by the Ministry of Media, read: “The English Premier League gives the green light to complete the Saudi acquisition.”
