Early Thursday, the Sun’s Neil Custis issued the following tweet claiming Newcastle’s takeover would be resolved next week.
Understand the @NUFC takeover has been delayed as Premier League concentrate on 'operation restart' but good chance things will be resolved next week.
— Neil Custis (@ncustisTheSun) May 21, 2020
On the face of it, Custis’s tweet is not necessarily negative. Though it is certainly unwelcome for Newcastle fans sick of waiting for the Premier League to complete its tests.
Under the circumstances with Project Restart kicking off this week, it’s understandable that a decision on the takeover has been delayed.
However, Custis has followed up with a report late Thursday that claims the league has found no reason to block the takeover. The delay in officially contacting both the seller and buyer is due to Project Restart.
This is what Custis writes in The Sun:
There had been a delay while authorities work on Project Restart as they try to get the game up and running amid the Covid-19 crisis.
SunSport understands the League’s owners and directors test found no barrier to the takeover.
Financier Staveley, who is fronting the bid, is expecting official word next week.
Then once the funds and paperwork are sorted an announcement will be made on or around June 1.
Custis’s reporting is very similar to what local journalists George Caulkin and Lee Ryder reported on Thursday. However, Custis has provided a potential date that the announcement will be made.
The date of June 1st also makes a lot of sense when you take into consideration the importance phase 1 and 2 of Project Restart will play in getting this season back underway.
Phase 1 began on Tuesday after being approved during a meeting on Monday. After Monday’s meeting, Premier League chief Richard Masters made the following comments about when phase 2, which involves contact training, will begin:
“Today we haven’t talked to the players or even that clubs yet about return to contact training, in terms of the fine details of protocols. We’re anticipating we can do that in the next week to 10 days.
“Before any decisions are made exactly the same as this stage’s decision, we will have very similar meetings with players and managers to explain to them how contact training would work and so they can raise their concerns and questions and we can answer any medical concerns they might have.”
Masters is adamant that phase 1 must be a success before even discussing phase 2. He cites a week to ten days before that discussion can begin.
That timeline is consistent with what Custis is reporting.
The Premier League’s focus next week will be moving to phase 2 of Project Restart. Considering that, it makes sense that the takeover will not be announced until the following Monday on June 1st, assuming all goes well with moving to phase 2.
The Amanda Staveley-led consortium will be given the green light to transfer the funds next week. This could take a few days, according to George Caulkin. However, once transferred, the deal will be official.
So while the announcement may not come until June 1st, we’ll probably hear some auspicious news next week after the Premier League contacts our prospective new owners and Mike Ashley.

You know it makes sense. You’re making yourself look like a phoney and there’s no need to. People won’t think any less of you if you say you know as much as the next man.

Comment #47Absolute nonsense yet again. When will there actually be a real ‘story’ with some new info that isn’t complete guesswork? Surely there are enough people in the EPL office to deal with 2 things at once. Project restart should have absolutely no effect on this at all unless it’s just one guy sitting at his laptop at home in his pants dealing with every EPL issue himself !

The PremierLeague have given the green light for Saudi-led consortium to take charge of Newcastle United for €335M. Once the paperwork is completed an announcement will be made on June 1st. The new president will be AlRumayyan. As a manager the dream is either Pochettino or Allegri

Comment #53So its moved on from the speculation of will it won’t it in the media, to now when.
1st June makes some sense in the PL changes its chairman on that day. But only to the point of them being able to say, “Decision was made by the former chairman, and we can’t go back on that decision.”
I don’t live in the Middle East so their culture is as far from me as understanding Quantum Physics. I would tend to listen to people who live out there, and like DMickey, an associate of mine (older bloke retired oil worker) who worked out there for most of his life, has said to me the Saudi’s will want to make as big an impact and statement as Dubai did with Man City. In his words, “It’s a state of pride for them.”
Now I’m not ITK on that like I said no idea, have no Saudi friends and haven’t lived out there, I can only go off their culture from people that do live out there or have lived out there. So lets hope they do want to make a big statement and we see something earlier, hopefully today, as some people have been told by others or early next week after Eid and our Bank holiday.

Quote of the day is D*nald Tr*mp just now:
“I tested very positively in another sense. So this morning I tested positively toward negative, right. So no, I tested perfectly this morning.
Meaning I tested negative. But that’s a way of saying it. Positively toward the negative.”

Comment #72Hibbitt I think we can me more relaxed than, say, a week ago. If it takes a week or whatever, we’ll wait. I don’t know when it started to go sour with Ashley. Initially he seemed fine and got rid of Fat Sam etc, but if it’s 11 years of pain, then we can wait another 11 days. I’d wait another year if I had to.

Comment #73“A QAnon conspiracy theorist won the GOP Senate primary in Oregon on Tuesday, giving a massive electoral stage to the bizarre pro-Trump movement that the FBI considers a potential domestic terror threat.
“Beyond the boundaries of Oregon, Jo Rae Perkins’ primary win also represents how far conspiracy theorists have ascended in national politics. QAnon supporters believe in an elaborate conspiracy theory that posits that Donald Trump is engaged in a secret war against a “cabal” made up of pedophile-cannibals in the global elite and Democratic Party. They are also convinced that Trump will soon imprison or execute top Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.”

Officially it’s still with the PL guys, although I’m not aware of any red flags thus far which is positive. Even after the green light there is still transfer of funds, documentation to sign etc. We’re getting closer. A little more patience required tho!
