According to a report in the Daily Mail, Newcastle have contacted the representatives of Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri to sound out a summer move.
The 28-year-old has featured sparingly this season for Jurgen Klopp’s league-topping side, leading to speculation that he’ll be moved on this summer.
The Swiss international has made just 10 appearances in all competitions, including only 2 starts in the Premier League. The winger has played just 1 minute for Liverpool since starting a 2-0 win against Watford at Anfield.
Shaqiri (pictured above) was the topic of transfer speculation in January with both Roma and Sevilla making inquiries. However, Klopp kept the stocky winger at Anfield for cover.
He did make 30 appearances last season after a surprising £13.5m move from relegated Stoke City in the summer. However, this season he’s struggled with injury and a lack of appearances.
Newcastle were linked with Shaqiri during the summer of 2015 while he was at Inter Milan. He ended up making a £15m move to Stoke while Newcastle brought in Graham Carr favorite Florian Thauvin from Marseille.
Shaqiri is a talented player when he’s switched on but was often a frustrating figure at Stoke. He’s definitely got moments of class in him and could be a decent option for Newcastle this summer.

Anyone getting a bit nervous give this thread a read.
Explains everything very well and again shows why this will have slowed the process down but will not stop it.

Comment #42I can only assume that no sports journalists will be going to Qatar to report on the world cup, human rights, bungs paid to won the world cup and bein sports giving backhanders to get tv rights. The last thing they’d want to do is feed money into the economy of such a regime
I’m assuming the media who are against Saudi’s will also be calling for england to boycott the Qatar world cup!!
It’s only fair isnt it or do the same rules not apply?

Comment #44This report from the WTO hasn’t even been released yet. Last minute shenanigans from the guardian IMO.
They’re going to build sufficient outrage to make the premier League think again.
Notice they use the vague label ‘the Saudi state’ but fail to name either the PIF or any individuals, presumably to cover their backs against litigation.
In order to block this deal there would have to be a proven link between the Saudi PIF or its officers and those individuals named in the o&d test.
I would be absolutely stunned if that was the case. No way did the PIF have anything to do with BeoutQ.

Comment #45JimIley, What a player! But as a poster, you show little balance in thinking that MA would be at fault if the takeover fails, which, of course it won’t. I understand loads and loads of NUFC fans hate MA, and with good reason, but don’t lose your marbles and blame him for every little or big thing you don’t like.

Comment #46Rob, gan canny: “no way did the PIF have anything to do with Beout”. Unless you’re more of a Middle East media expert ITK than me, I would suggest you’re taking a bit of a punt with that claim (Full disclosure : I have not a single piece of insider knowledge whatsoever about Arab business anywhere at all). You….?

Comment #47Erm, I meant they’re hoping to build outrage, not going to – thanks predictive text.
😉
Btw, I doubt very much it will work.

You have misread. This is not mikes fault but the top 6 who do not want the competition.
If it’s blocked you can forget about NUFC challenging for anything.
It will kill footy in north East.

Comment #49Thank you, Jim, I have misread, thank you for kindly putting me right. On the other hand, although I appreciate very much your suspicions about the top 6, they aren’t on the D & O committee (or are they? I really have found it impossible to find out who is actually making this decision). Could you kindly advise further on this matter? Or any other poster?

The top 6 don’t get any say in the matter. They have no authority whatsoever to block this deal. I’m sure they don’t want competition, but it’s not their choice.

Comment #51The top 6 do not have any official say in matters. But they rule the league because they own it. It’s that simple. Phones still exist!!!
Leave things alone or we vote for a champions league league.
Take the top 4 out of the prem and it’s basically an upgraded championship and nobody but nobody of any class will play in it. Revenue goes through the floor. Sky? They will phook off as well. You might even get Celtic joining to totally phook things.

The decision is made by the FAPL board. The board is elected by vote from the 20 clubs in the league, and the votes of the top 6 are not worth any more than the votes of the other teams. They do not control the board, the chairman or the executives.

Comment #53Jimiley, my last comment might as well serve as a reply to you too as it largely covers your points.
I’d add that I don’t think the big 6 clubs would be likely to vote for a champions league league. Maybe Liverpool and City currently, but there is no real benefit for the majority of them. Who wants to go out and prove to the world that you’re actually not quite as good as the other big teams from elsewhere on a consistent basis? You might get two or three teams from England and Spain in favour, and maybe Juve, PSG and Bayern, but who wants to watch 6 teams play each other on repeat all season?
I can’t see any of the other teams really going in for it as they would likely be in for a regular battering. I also think most fans and players would rather their teams win domestic leagues than struggle to compete for continental honours if they had to choose between the two.
Just my opinion, though.
