There are sometimes in business when a difficult decision has to be made, and you never have all the facts you would like in front of you to make the “correct” decision.
The usual thing most managers do in these circumstances is to delay the decision.
But after a while, that’s no longer good enough, becasue things become frozen in time.
And making the decision, whether it’s the correct one or not, becomes more important than the decision itself.
That seems the classic situation the Premier League are in now with Newcastle’s takeover, and it even looks like they doing their damndest to find a legitimate way to block the deal.
The owners’ and directors’ test started on April 9th, according to The Athletic’s George Caulkin, and that’s exactly 9 weeks on a process that usually takes about three weeks.
Richard Masters – Premier League CEO
That could only happen to Newcastle.
We think the deal will still go through, but they must keep their test as laid out currently: it’s a legal test, not a moral test.
The WTO are to announce their decision on the Saudi piracy issue next week, and the decision is unlikely to be announced before then.
Since it’s being reported the WTO will say the Saudi government is behind beoutQ pirating the Premier League games from beIN Sports, based in Qatar, they may think that’s a good time to announce the deal has been blocked.
It’s a little bit ominous, but we need a decision soon.
The Premier League are starting to look weak like they are frozen in time and are unwilling to show the courage needed to announce a decision one way or another.
Comments welcome.

Comment #7If the PL played this right they’d be quids in. In the interim tell the Saudis to do X,Y,Z to placate the Qataris and Bein and put the TV rights up for tender down the line. Many people have already suggested this and who knows, maybe Masters is thinking on these lines.

Comment #9But if Saudi put a stop to the alleged piracy some time back, then surely that’s all the WTO can report.
As said, the O&D test is a legal and objective measure but if the application contained known falsehoods then there would be grounds to bounce it.
I honestly think that bouncing the application is highly political with massive national and international ramifications. Can we hope that on receipt, the EPL and FA are praying that the WTO report doesn’t present any problems though I suspect they’ll have been tipped off as to its contents.

Comment #14In my opinion they won’t be looking to “block it” they’re working on getting it through whilst ensuring it’s legally watertight.

Comment #20Surely the Premier League have to PROVE that the Saudi government is behind beoutQ pirating the Premier League games from beIN Sports! That’s the crux of the matter. I feel had there been grounds to block the “Take Over” it would have been blocked by now.
It would appear the the EPL don’t want this deal to come about but are finding it extremely difficult to find a legitimate reason to block it!
Well that’s my take on it but I’ll be glad when we know one way or the other, The last nine weeks have been painful to say the least and anyway if it doesn’t come about soon I’ll have to buy another bottle of Malt!

Comment #21question . Can the FA block the takeover based on the report off the WTO ? …
as i’m under the impression that the WTO are Arbitrators and there main purpose is to get people around a table and find a solution to whatever problems they have …
can anyone throw any more light on the subject ?…

The PL has already had a copy of the wto report.
There’s no possibility of them blocking the takeover. They don’t do controversial. Too many powerful forces whom they rely on for their existence.

Comment #32I met someone yesterday whilst working in central London, this person is in the circles that probably know a little more than what we do, he’s certainly known to the prospective new owners, I quizzed them on the takeover to find out an ounce more information than we already know. All I can say is with a wry smile and told to keep the faith it’s happening, the premier league have concentrated in ‘project restart’ everything is being done via email and video link. But the prospective new owners are pushing hard to get this through. My assumption on the info I gained was that the deal has been done, it’s not upto the premier league to announce it, it’s the new owners which we have and it’s upto them when they announce it. But from what I gathered yesterday, we can start looking up! Believe me I’ve found it hard to believe who I met yesterday but it’s happening! #CANS
