Pundit Cites Premier League Survival In His Latest Newcastle Prediction

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has given his predictions for the next round of Premier League fixtures. He has Newcastle only managing a 1-1 draw against struggling Aston Villa.

Here is his prediction in full:

I’ve said before that I think Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has done a really good job and his side know how to play his system. That’s why they are safe already.

Sunday’s win over Sheffield United essentially secured the Magpies’ survival – they are 13th, 11 points above the bottom three with eight games to go.

Villa, meanwhile, are still in deep trouble. They have had a bit of a nightmare in their first two games back, and I think they will have to wait a little bit longer for their first win since January.

After Sunday’s performance, a draw would be a disappointment in our book. Villa are in loads of trouble at the moment and haven’t played very well in their two games back since the league returned.

However, they are fighting for their Premier League lives which makes them a dangerous opponent. A win against the Magpies could see them escape the dreaded drop zone.

Newcastle seem to have something about them. They were outstanding on Sunday and look primed to shoot up the table. There’s an air of confidence permeating through the team and they look like such a close-knit group at the moment.

We expect Bruce to keep the same team he deployed against the Blades, with a slight chance he’ll make one or two changes.

A win will see Newcastle surpass that magical 40 point threshold, though as Lawro states, we are almost certainly safe now.

Lawrenson had his streak of five straight predictions snapped after going for a draw on Sunday. So let’s hope he wrong this time as well, and we capture all three points at home against Aston Villa.

After all, Bruce and the lads want to finish as high as possible. Lawrenson seems to think we’ll take the foot off the gas now that we are in all likelihood safe from the drop.

What Will The Result Be Against Aston Villa On Wednesday?

Joelinton still has a worse goals/min ration than:

    John Dahl Tomasson
    Andreas Andersson
    Emmanuel Riviere
    Xisco
    Joselu

Let’s not get carried away just yet. 3-5 more goals before the end of the season and they might be cause for optimism.

For Villa I’d be looking to neutralise Grealish first and foremost, and if we can keep half an eye on McGinn, and to a lesser extent El Ghazi, we will probably do well. I don’t think we’ve got the pace at the back to play a higher defensive line, so I’d want to see the front men and midfield pressing their back line to cut the supply to the midfield where possible.

They looked decent at Sheff Utd last week, looked much more likely to win it aside from that one GK error, but I think we can break them down if we come in with a positive game and try to play on our terms.

If we are solid through our centre and mark Grealish out of the game our speed up top will cause them havoc, it’s been their weakness all season.

I pray Bruce sticks Manquillo to deal with Grealisg, Yedlin and Krafth will be outclassed

So a pressing game to restrict their movement, man 2 man on Grealish?
Keep tight on him will make the game easier for the rest of our team
man 2 man on Grealish a good tactic?

Not man to man necessarily, but making sure he isn’t given too much space or too much of the ball would be wise. Cutting off his supply would be the most effective way of neutralising his threat IMO. He rarely comes and wins balls for himself so if we can keep pressure on elsewhere we can hopefully keep him out of the game without man marking him specifically. We get 5 subs now and we’ve got a few players at the front who can press quite well. Would like to see Joel and Miggy being a nuisance for their back line, maybe ASM too and definitely Ritchie and Lazaro if they play.

Aguero out long term with the knee injury by the looks of things! He nearly always scores against us so that’s a bit of a bonus!

Much prefer playing City when Jesus is up front he is good but nowhere near as good as Aguero although City could end up playing that false 9 formation with De Bruyne up front which they used to destroy Man Utd in the league cup at Old Trafford

Man to man on their Ken Doll sounds smart, but which man??

He seems to get a bit of a free role in their set-up so who do we put on him that means they’ll be missing from our shape?

I feel like Ritchie could shackle him but could he keep up with him in a race for the ball over 15-20 yards??

Put ASM up against Targett and him beside Manquillo will dominate that left hand side Grealish doesn’t track back that well and then have Almiron available for the cut back when we overload them

    & I was forgetting 5 subs!
It all gets very confusing with that no of players, but you can’t always rely on our pressing game – mentioning no names – but something has changed – we not entirely predicable, so we might be able to keep the pressure on
Much depends as on Sunday on the position of JonJoe – playing him further forward is much more aggressive, and I would stick with him and the Super Cool Mr Hayden – such an attractive player ?

Kev….whatevs. If you are right, then Kashoggi’s fiance and Saudi Tv and the WSJ and Amnesty are all making noise about nothing.

The takeover may not happen ( I’m positive it will happen) but to think that its all noise ….thats going towards Flat Earth stuff.

If this happens, you’ll need to put your hand up and say ” I got it wrong”

    Archaeomag,

I’d stick with Hayden and Shelvey too. Keep Hayden on the press winning balls as much as possible, tell him to get in the opposition’s faces and make sure he knows he won’t have to save anything in the tank for the full 90. Bring Bentaleb on soon after half time or when Hayden starts to tire so we have a fresh set of legs to take up the role and keep the pressure on. There’s been mistakes in this Villa team all season and I think if we come out and rock them early on we’ll see that. Their left side is there to be exposed and exploited, which Cheslea did effectively at the weekend. I’d like to see a positive game plan from us as I don’t think they’ll be looking at our back line and seeing easy ways through in the same way.

Replaced when? At the very least he should be given till the end of the season to finish it . He deserves that.

If what i am reading is true, the saudis are going to take this slowly. If so, we may have to wait for a shiny new manager.

If Bruce starts getting more wins, they might leave him in place for next season.

Seems unlikely, but its quite possible.
