Report – Newcastle To Make First Summer Signing

Back in April, there were reports that Newcastle were lining up local lad Mark Gillespie as a free agent this summer.

The 28-year-old had become a free agent are leaving Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. He joined them as a free agent from Walsall in 2018.

Gillespie is a Carlisle Academy product but was born in Newcastle. His move to his hometown club had been in the works before the coronavirus and Newcastle’s takeover threw it into doubt.

However, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie is reporting that the goalkeeper has agreed to join Newcastle on a three-year deal. He will replace Rob Elliot, who will depart Newcastle after nine years at the club on June 30th.

This has to be a dream move for Mark. Though he will find it a challenge to get much playing time with Martin Dubravka the clear number one at the moment.

However, if this report is accurate, then we are thrilled that Newcastle have added another Geordie to the ranks.

Toon Amry, let’s make this clear, we are still owned by MA, the Prem is holding up the deal, we cannot afford to lose it but we need to prepare for business as usual just in case the sale doesn’t go through.
So not a bad signing, Elliot was leaving so that’s covered, good business.
At least is not a report that we are talking to a keeper worth 50 million or one of those dumb stories.

    Sneer away Kevin
(you have a funny attitude for a supporter)
but his stats compare quite well with another ex Geordie Fraser Forster
who got a winners medal with Celtic.

Doesn’t matter how much signings cost – they’re taking the place of players the new owners would want. It’s like installing a home cinema during a house sale. Very odd.

This is a great sign the takeover is all but done. Ashley not spending a penny. Buy free replacement plsyers all day long, it’s just good business no matter how unlikely it is he will play. But if they start spending 10-20M on players then if get nervous.

Its as you were on the takeover front!! Soooonnnnn

I`m not sure what i make of the Gillespie signing tbh, from the outset it has Ashley written all over it, but if we have lost one of our keepers then it makes sense to replace him.
Elliot was always going to leave at some point, nowhere near the first team, so he has decided to go.
Gillespie must think that being 2nd or 3 rd choice in the EPL is better than playing 1st team football in the SPL.

Oh and erm, a bigger pay cheque would help make his mind up about that i`m sure.

I don’t think we’re stuck with him at all, I just don’t see why he would sell a business that gives him free advertising to millions and makes £50m+ profit a year.

I think we can get rid of him, but we need him to actually want to sell, not just to keep pretending he does while would-be buyers, second buyers, time-wasters and tire-kickers are rolled out in an endless parade of lies.

He won’t sell until the club is no longer a sensible investment. That means letting Ashley know we won’t be milked like a cash cow. We have to take his profits away or he will never, ever sell while he has a choice.

Pat they’re not taking any place in the squad unless they have been allocated it. And if he ever makes the 25 man squad you can be fairly sure hes going to be worth the place.

    Stop worrying.

GP; You’re missing my point. Who is signing the checks? This deal may have been sorted 6 months ago. I don’t know. If we’re building the club, trying to improve, we should be trying to sign a better keeper than Dubravka. I doubt this player is.
New deals for Carroll and Manquillo is another indication the deal is dead. Who agreed to those deals?
The richest club in the world would be a trifle more ambitious. I hope I’m wrong.

Carroll is a 1 year deal, i wouldnt have signed him but its not affecting the long term plans of the club.

Manquillo is out best RB imo, why let him go when you have 2 others who should be out the door first. We wont be signing 2 new RBs this summer so keeping your current best one as backup to a new RB makes sense to me. also with a 4 year deal, you can still sell him after 2 years if you want and still get money for him.

On Dubs i agree we should have his replacement in mind tho he has at least 2 years at the PL level ahead of him for me and given the amount of improvements and investment needed throughout the squad, Dubs’ replacement can be something for a year or 2 down the line. Maybe even Woodman coming good is the plan so we already have his replacement?

I appreciate your point of view but I just dont see anything thats happened with AC, Manq or Gillespie as an indication that the takeover must be off.

There are some posters saying that giving Manquillo an extended contract is a negative step, is it really?
He has been our most improved player and most fans have been quite happy to see him in the team.
Just bcos we have given him a new contract does`nt mean the deal the PL have blocked the takeover.

The ONLY reason i have hope about the takeover going through is bcos we hav`,nt heard it has been blocked.
Journo`s would of been all over it like a rash if it had, wanting to be the first to announce it, i can just imagine them all foaming at the mouth like rapid dogs at the front of the queue. Sad barstewards

I think it will happen though

Negative step for the progress of the takeover, not for the progress of the club. Giving players a 4 year deal when a takeover is supposedly imminent seems very unlikely.
