Carroll, Darlow, And Schar Get Starts Against Manchester City

Here is the team Steve Bruce has selected for the evening’s FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City. It has four changes from the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

It looks as though Steve Bruce has reverted to five at the back and will play a 5-4-1 with Miguel Almiron out on the right-wing.

Andy Carroll gets his first start since December. Karl Darlow gets another opportunity in goal in this competition.

This is who Pep Guardiola will send out for the visitors.

It’s all to play for this evening as a place in the semi-finals is up for grabs. The lads will be up against a very strong Manchester City side who will be looking to compensate for a disappointing league campaign with more cup success.

Bruce has made quite a few changes but also altered the formation. It worked against the Citizens in November. Let’s hope for another solid display from the lads this evening.

Howay The Lads!

Darlow has let a few goals in against League one opposition. Not confident he can keep this lot out but you never know… Poor idea by Bruce though.

I suppose one plus is when we are an unknown quantity decent opponents seem to struggle to get the measure of us. Maybe that’s what Bruce us going for.

I am taking some of that action.

Just imagine it’s half time at SJP
Alan Shearer is about to draw the teams for the FA cup semis
“Before I make the draw I have a brief announcement to make
about a change in the ownership of Newcastle United”

You’re an idiot. Trying to match this city team with 4 at the back would be tactical suicide. Bruce had no choice and dropping Joelinton means we don’t have a passenger to carry!

Anyone remember that worldie of a wrongly disallowed goal that Tiote scored against MC a while back? Screamer.

I reckon we’re going to do them today!

    Jib,
Protecting him from what, he didn’t need protecting against Rochdale when safety was far from assured.

So if we get our arses handed to us, is Darlow gonna take the blame?
Few on here seem to be implying he should.
Anyway, not expecting much but you never know.
    Ilovetoon, Where’s your prediction? 😀

Thought I’d do some stat hunting…

Darlow’s last 2 appearances for NUFC resulted in:

2 goals against champo side WBA

2 goals conceded against league 1 Oxford

4 goals from 2 games against significantly worse opposition.

    Dubs last 4 games:

1 goal conceded at PL side Villa, due to a Shelvey error

0 goals conceded against PL side Sheff Utd

0 goals conceded against PL side Southampton

0 goals conceded against PL side Norwich

1 goal in 4 games against top-flight teams.

Ashley is at the ground today, he will be making the announcement just before kick off, 1/2 time or full time. Lets face it, in the unlikely event we loose, still celebrate after the announcement

    Lee Ryder on the XI

Big call by Steve Bruce on the goalkeeping situation. Whether he’s sticking to a promise to Darlow to play in the FA Cup or has been swayed by what he described as a “soft goal” against Villa is an interesting one.

Bruce offered Dubravka some public support only on Friday.

Glad Carroll is starting, he looked good in his cameo and he is always a danger in the box, but can we get it into the box…. Not happy about Darlow tbh and I really don’t rate S.Longstaff..okay pass on him and a decent shot but he takes to long on the ball.

Ffs lads. Let’s get behind Darlow til at least the game starts eh. He’s got the nod so we should back him.
I would put money on it now that he won’t be our worst player tonight.
City are a different animal. Dubs wouldn’t be the difference when man for man they outclass us.
We need the performance of the season here, so let’s back the team already.

I won’t bother saying it slowly, why protect him now from injury when we’re pretty much home yet play him at a league one ground in January when relegation was still a very real possibility.
