Newcastle Easily Knocked Out Of FA Cup In 2-0 Defeat To Manchester City

Newcastle emerged from the break unchanged after a dismal 1-0 first half though Fabian Schar pushed forward into the midfield.

The change made a slight difference as Newcastle were able to keep the ball more and string together a few passes. The early improvement, however, didn’t produce much in the final third apart from a tempting Saint-Maximin cross that found no takers in the box.

Bruce countered a double Manchester City change in the 64th minute with one of his own. Off came Andy Carroll, who had just picked up a yellow, and Miguel Almiron for Joelinton and Dwight Gayle.

It should have paid immediate dividends as City lost possession deep in their end on a wayward pass from Nicolas Otamendi that fell to Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman was able to find Dwight Gayle in the box, but the striker missed a tap in from 10 yards out and somehow put the ball over the crossbar.

As fate would have it, Manchester City made it 2-0 soon afterward through Raheem Sterling. The winger found the back of the net from the edge of the area after cutting inside from the left.

Bruce made a second double substitution in the 74th minute bringing Valentino Lazaro and DeAndre Yedlin on for Saint-Maximin and Danny Rose. Javier Manquillo moved to left wing-back with Yedlin coming in on the right.

The final change was Matty Longstaff coming on for Isaac Hayden just four minutes later as Steve Bruce seemed to be conserving some of his stars for Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The second goal killed the game especially coming so soon after the dreadful miss from Gayle. There was a slight improvement in the second half but this was a walk in the park for Manchester City this evening.

Bruce played the tactics we have used against City for the past few seasons. On occasion we have stayed in the game long enough to spring a surprise or two late on. You cannot legislate for dreadful decision making by Schaer. The gulf in the sides is very large and shows the task facing the new owners. You can argue that Bruce should have started with the second half formation, but the City players reflect their value, skillful and willing to work hard.

Northumbrian – Shame on you betting against your own club. Cyprus thought he was on a winner at 15 to 1 on the Toon. Turned out to be another reckless bet that lost him a fiver.

    Where does Joe play??
He is not a striker even though some idiot paid 40 million for him to be a striker.
    he is not a winger.
He is not a full back.
he is too tall and slow for midfield.
That leaves CB. He is scared to put his head where it hurts.
    That leaves goalie.
We bought him to be a goalkeeper . Now I understand

Jail, the first half was a crime. Rafa mugged you off doing worse in that came and didn’t have a cut till 15 mins to go. Same v Chelsea. At least u are not hanging Bruce now, but guys forgave the same crap from benitez, but it’s suddenly unacceptable now.

KV – are you having another little dig at me? I won’t rise to the bait though and say that £8m was spent on a “player” who has rarely figure since the Club bought him.So doubt he has much future potential. There are not many however that will survive IF this takeover ever happens. If it doesn’t the Championship beckons again. But you’ll have more reliable information on that than me especially coming from that great footballing resort of Torquay.

Bruce being slated, nothing new there. Players being blasted apart from ASM (who gave the ball away more than anyone else in 1st half). Doesnt matter what tactics are used, citeh are one of the best sides in the world. It was a good effort and nice to have a run in the cup.

As for ASM off to citeh, you need to learn how to retain possession, love the lad think he’s a very good talent but it’s also a dose of reality for fans. ASM is very good at nufc, he’s got a long way to go before joining a citeh type club as have suggested

    Roll on takeover completion

In my opinion the pl have already passed this takeover and the buyers seller are waiting for the best time to announce, is it conceivable that Ashley has been holding back while we still had a chance of silverware under his ownership, announcement next week.

Thought the first half was worse than most other seasons against City but the second was a bit better. No way we were ever going to win the cup but at least have a go. Carroll got it and for me was trying hard, ASM was shackled and our passing is atrocious (has been for a few years). Still feel sorry for those Scousers 30 years of hurt – poor little lambs.

    My summary

I don’t blame Bruce for setting up the way we did from the start but it was a hard watch but strong mention for Darlow who had a good first half and played well for the 90. Schar stupid mistake no matter what people say about it being soft you don’t put your hands on players like that, it looked like a blatant push.

Second half a lot better with Schar in DM but I worry about him now he is becoming a liability when once I rated him as one of the best in the league. I think the referee was to harsh on Carroll all game he had every right to go for the balls he did. Wow Gayle can’t say much about that. I knew straight away they would score inside 2-3 minutes. But played a lot better pushing them higher up shame we didn’t go like that from the start.

Remember tho this is Man City a strong side, well doesn’t matter they are always a strong side who ever is in the 11 and let’s not forget they have been pretty strong since coming back.
