Newcastle Easily Knocked Out Of FA Cup In 2-0 Defeat To Manchester City

Newcastle emerged from the break unchanged after a dismal 1-0 first half though Fabian Schar pushed forward into the midfield.

The change made a slight difference as Newcastle were able to keep the ball more and string together a few passes. The early improvement, however, didn’t produce much in the final third apart from a tempting Saint-Maximin cross that found no takers in the box.

Bruce countered a double Manchester City change in the 64th minute with one of his own. Off came Andy Carroll, who had just picked up a yellow, and Miguel Almiron for Joelinton and Dwight Gayle.

It should have paid immediate dividends as City lost possession deep in their end on a wayward pass from Nicolas Otamendi that fell to Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman was able to find Dwight Gayle in the box, but the striker missed a tap in from 10 yards out and somehow put the ball over the crossbar.

As fate would have it, Manchester City made it 2-0 soon afterward through Raheem Sterling. The winger found the back of the net from the edge of the area after cutting inside from the left.

Bruce made a second double substitution in the 74th minute bringing Valentino Lazaro and DeAndre Yedlin on for Saint-Maximin and Danny Rose. Javier Manquillo moved to left wing-back with Yedlin coming in on the right.

The final change was Matty Longstaff coming on for Isaac Hayden just four minutes later as Steve Bruce seemed to be conserving some of his stars for Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The second goal killed the game especially coming so soon after the dreadful miss from Gayle. There was a slight improvement in the second half but this was a walk in the park for Manchester City this evening.

Garbage. Poor tactics from kick off.

However, people complaining about Bruce’s tactics on here? Most of the people on here were advocating a switch to 5 at the back for today, given when we have done that in the last however long, we have generally surrendered possession. Fair play to Jail for not blaming Bruce, as he did want the switch to 5.

That sort of negativity is embarrassing though. Schaar’s double push was sheer stupidity, but fact of the matter is, as we have seen many a time, you sit so deep and invite so much pressure, eventually one individual is guaranteed to have a lapse and do something stupid.

    And that miss…..

An expected result, but the manner of it was depressing. Takeover please.

Mund I think you’re right about Carroll Laporte and Otamendi didn’t like what Carroll was doing to them .He was far stronger and winning balls in the air. They are not used to physical battles playing for City

30 years of hurt for scousers.???
That includes two champions leagues and lots of cup wins and lots of top 4 finishes.
Hurt? wtf is hurt at the toon? There is no hurt because you need to experience winning to experience hurt. 1927 and the league win. The centenary of winning it is getting closer. Utter disgrace.
We are only there to make up the numbers. The fakeover will not happen because it upsets the status quo.
If the Crown Prince was down to his last few hundred million it would be passed no problem, but he is too rich.

How many NUFC players would get into the Man.City squad, let alone the team ?
Maybe a couple, and they wouldn’t get many minutes playing time throughout the season.
Yet we managed to take a point off them earlier in the season. How the !!!!!!!! did we do that ?

Richie was missed but for me the Carroll experiment failed. Having stuck to his guns in the league it was an odd time for Bruce to trial it.

AC puts himself about but it reminded me of Shearer right at the end – plays manfully but It stifles the overall team movement. City’s passing is ridiculously fluid – those raking passes and deft touches. Having said that – we could/should have spawned an equaliser and then who knows?

I’ll respond to you for once, joelinton is a forward, mainly a wide forward. Nowhere near as talented as Jesus, or Firmino but Brazil is producing these type of forwards who can play anywhere across a front 3.

They arent prolific goalscorers, work hard, decent on the ball type forward. Your blasting the lad because we choose to use him as leading our line, think it’s been mentioned enough times it’s a new role for him but that wont stop you though. Welcome to the world of a modern day forward

Interesting stat……firmino hasn’t scored a goal at home all season, considering the players he has around him that’s some feat. If he was here he’d be blasted day in day out!!

Ah well, that’s another season over.

    Onwards and upwards.

Oh just to say to the lettuce eater, why Saudi wants to buy us, 70% of their population support MBS in what he’s doing – we will be a massive, massive club in KSA, every under 30 will support us.

The exposure he (MBS) will get worldwide because of us is immense. In effect we’ve just picked up 20 million fans – each one buys a shirt or gets a subscription to the new KSA MBC sports channel – all of a sudden the $350m paid is paid for.

I like Schar but he does have moments of stupidity.

Did enjoy Carroll flying onto challenges and aerial battles but sadly that was about it.

Think we just need the premier league to make a decision now one way or another this week.

Have to admit city are a great watch. Little 1-2’s, triangles, 1+2 touch, pass and move, always a pass avaiable, fantastic free flowing football, whereas we hardly seem able to put 2 passes together. If bruce had city’s players would he have them playing like that?
    Not a prayer.

The Carroll experiment failed? Not really. Based on today, the ‘insert any player name here’ experiment failed.

The way we setup failed Carroll. First half, he won the majority of balls up to him, but there was nothing there for him. We didn’t provide any service to a striker who was comfortably winning the battle against their centre halves, but we played in a way that only gave him battles in mid field, not in a dangerous area.

If the Carroll experiment has failed, it has been a season long fitness demonstration. Absolutely nothing to do with his on field contrubution.

How embarrassing is it to find out after the first 27 minutes your opponents have made 188 passes and we have managed 15 or that the possession was 85% to 15%. To rub it in and hear the commentator later say that the opposition could have been playing ‘mannequins’ brings this club down to a new depth.
Just pray this club is sold to the Saudis as the future looks worse than bleak if it isn’t.
After 60 odd years of watching this club I don’t think I can bear much more.
