Steve Bruce Confirms Signing And Laments An Empty St James Park In Post-Match Comments

Newcastle have bowed out of the FA Cup after a disappointing evening. The lads followed up a timid first half with an improved display in the second, giving them a chance. But ultimately, Manchester City were too much for the Magpies.

Even so, it was two key events that stand out as nails in our FA Cup coffin. The first was an unnecessary push from Fabian Schar on Gabriel Jesus in the box resulting in a penalty.

Here’s what Steve Bruce had to say about the penalty as published by the Northern Echo:

“He’ll be disappointed and frustrated. Of course, he has to burden that – it’s a mistake, a blatant mistake. I don’t know why, but that’s what happens in football.

“The one thing you need when you’re playing against Man City is for your defenders to be concentrating, and concentration was key to it. When I look back on it now, it was a poor challenge that he didn’t have to make.”

The second incident that proved costly was Dwight Gayle’s point-blank miss just minutes after coming on. Allan Saint-Maximin did brilliantly to get Dwight the ball, but what should have been a tap in was sent over the crossbar.

As it so often happens, Manchester City put the game away just minutes later through Raheem Sterling. What might have been had Gayle sunk his golden chance?

There’s a lot to rue for how different it all could have gone had the circumstances not been so extreme. For one, Newcastle were without the backing of the home crowd to cheer them on.

Bruce reflected on how big of a miss having a full St James Park was for his team:

“It’s bad enough playing Manchester City anyway. But there’s no doubt it’s even harder without 52,000 mad Geordies shouting their heads off to give us some encouragement.

“There’s no question that we wanted and needed that. Had this game been taking place normally at half-past-six on a Sunday night, it would have been terrific.

“It wasn’t to be, and when you’re playing against these teams, you really need your crowd to give you a lift. We’re unique here, and it would have been a marvelous occasion.

“It’s not the case, and supporters or no supporters, we were too passive in our first-half approach. We were better in the second half and made it a cup tie, and it would have been interesting if we had taken that big chance (from Gayle), which you have to take when you play against these big teams.”

It just wasn’t meant to be once again. Now it’s on to another big match at Bournemouth, who like Aston Villa last Wednesday, are in a fight for their Premier League lives.

On a positive note, Steve Bruce has confirmed that local lad Mark Gillespie will join Newcastle this summer as a free agent.

“I think it’s been signed in the last 24 hours. We’re delighted to have him on board. He was here as a youngster, went away and played some games, and we welcome him back.”

Sorry, ignore the last part there. What I was meaning to type before hitting send was that if people think I am defending Ashley, that is utterly their perogative, but I am pretty sure anyone viewing objectively would not think that way.

    KV,
If we are posting profit and it shows in the accounts each year, then you have just demonstrated exactly how he isn’t bleeding the club dry….. Pretty sure he also only took 30million as a loan repayment once.

Why do I want him gone? For exactly the reasons I said earlier. We have become a non entity that has lost the hope, the sparkle, that made us all fall in love with the club.

He has been terrible for a lack of ambition, for his appointments in key roles, for the apathetic way he treats the fans of the club.

I thought the same mate. It was very obvious to us all that the tactics were the biggest issue, not the lack of crowd. We can’t go into games against teams like City trying to get away with lumping balls up the park all game and not expecting find ourselves under constant, heavy pressure.

The crowd really is essential. You need that little bit more adrenaline it gives you to drive into challenges. We were a wall of players that was very tough to break down, but we weren’t exactly biting into tackles, again and again and again, and really against that quality, that’s your only hope, along with doing nothing silly, taking your chances, limited as they’ll be, and hoping your keeper has a blinder.

Ledge cool your jets with your ridiculously puerile talk about “knob jockeys” ffs man grow up.

I know rafa is better than Bruce. Congrats on your wisdom.

The reason I’m comparing them is that they both play some awful shite against City etc with a similar team.

Ergo they are comparable, albeit with Bruce getting marginally more points.

Either way the comparison is valid in terms of nufc.

He takes £30m a year mate, and the £30m that is left in the club accounts is still his money at the end of the day. It might not be in his personal account, but if he wants to take it out he can. There’s nothing stopping him. Most likely is he leaves it in the club so he only pays a lower rate of corporstion tax rather than 40% income tax on that money. It’s still his though. It’s clearly not being reinvested in facilities or players.

Maybe we we’re being a bit hard on the old cabbage-tussler. He may not know his tic tacs from his tactics but he can sniff out a bit of bacon at 50 paces.

The crowd can have a huge effect, but it’s pirely psychological and a top manager should be able to motivate the team without the crowd. The crowd is also not to blame for our negative approach. City are a great side no doubt about it, but our approach in the first half was never, ever going to yield results. We barely made it into the final third of the field.

Blaming the lack of fans just came across as a cop-out, especially when a change of tactics at half time clearly helped us along.

Would the fans have helped? Probably.

Were they the reason we didn’t win? Not a chance.

Since signing Schar or Cher?? I’ve been mostly positive about his performances… BUT TODAY… he wasn’t content on fouling the city player once but had to do it again to make sure the ref saw it… Is it the warm weather or the fact that he needed a haircut? We were dreadful 1st half and someone rightly commented after the hard work of keeping the tidal wave that is Citeh we gave to go and gift them the 1st goal.
That’s the worst toon performance in God knows how long, but, people are saying he’s a championship player at best but who got us a point against a dreadful Villa side

Yeah, but the crowd is a necessary element in a victory for a team like us against a team like that.

Basically if we don’t out compete them you’re beat.

They’re so much better. They’re constantly coming at you, from so many different angles.

Without the crowd, roaring you into challenges, no chance.

Nicky, point taken mate, as I said I don’t doubt it would have helped.

It sounds to me like Bruce has convinced himself that it didn’t matter what we did, we were going to lose anyway without the crowd, and I just can’t say I agree. It was always going tonbe a tough ask, but if we had turned up with a proper gameplan and a motivated and well drilled side there’s no reason we couldn’t have pinched a win there maybe 1 time in 10.

If Oxford can come to SJP and hold us to a 0-0 with 50,000 of our fans in the stands, we have got to believe we had a chance of beating city IMO.

man city are light years ahead of us. we are so poor that we can’t even give them a game. why is it lesser clubs can atleast put up some sort of resistance? i’ve never seen a team give up possession so much to the opposition in living memory.

    like boys against men.

I’d suggested that the takeover’s be finalised by this week and there’s little time left for that to happen.

But, and this is me grasping at straws, Ashley always wanted to win a trophy before he sold up but ad that’s not going to happen this season, he’s no reason to hang in to the club.

So, might it be the case that the EPL have cleared the O&D applicants and as there’s no FA cup to be won this season, Ashley’ll sign the papers and complete the sale?

Let’s will that to be the case and be ready to open the cans or pop the corks at the weekend.

Hey ho… we can but live in hope.

    Have a good day all.

Must hope that the team can put this loss behind us and get motivated for Bournemouth on Wednesday.

I’m concerned this loss might linger on the team and can see a drab run in if the players can’t find their fire.

Bournemouth will see us as a very winnable match and one they must take all 3 points as they fight for survival.

Hopefully our players will be up for it and not already on the beach.

Well, the overriding factor, their quality.

A contributing factor, our inability to rise to the challenge on the day.

Our fantastic crowd behind us would have helped for sure, if we gave them something to cheer about.

Start well, get the crowd behind you, Newcastle can beat anyone, even under Ashley, and Steve Bruce.

We got beat because they are far and away better than us and because Ashley has for 13 years failed to grow the club, not because of Steve Bruce’s tactics.

    Lilongwe,
We pay KBA agency a hefty sum for doing what exactly. He owns 50% of KBA ergo pocketing half of the fee they charge us, again, for what? It is not theft but it’s taking money from the club that isn’t exactly kosher.
