Steve Bruce Confirms Signing And Laments An Empty St James Park In Post-Match Comments

Newcastle have bowed out of the FA Cup after a disappointing evening. The lads followed up a timid first half with an improved display in the second, giving them a chance. But ultimately, Manchester City were too much for the Magpies.

Even so, it was two key events that stand out as nails in our FA Cup coffin. The first was an unnecessary push from Fabian Schar on Gabriel Jesus in the box resulting in a penalty.

Here’s what Steve Bruce had to say about the penalty as published by the Northern Echo:

“He’ll be disappointed and frustrated. Of course, he has to burden that – it’s a mistake, a blatant mistake. I don’t know why, but that’s what happens in football.

“The one thing you need when you’re playing against Man City is for your defenders to be concentrating, and concentration was key to it. When I look back on it now, it was a poor challenge that he didn’t have to make.”

The second incident that proved costly was Dwight Gayle’s point-blank miss just minutes after coming on. Allan Saint-Maximin did brilliantly to get Dwight the ball, but what should have been a tap in was sent over the crossbar.

As it so often happens, Manchester City put the game away just minutes later through Raheem Sterling. What might have been had Gayle sunk his golden chance?

There’s a lot to rue for how different it all could have gone had the circumstances not been so extreme. For one, Newcastle were without the backing of the home crowd to cheer them on.

Bruce reflected on how big of a miss having a full St James Park was for his team:

“It’s bad enough playing Manchester City anyway. But there’s no doubt it’s even harder without 52,000 mad Geordies shouting their heads off to give us some encouragement.

“There’s no question that we wanted and needed that. Had this game been taking place normally at half-past-six on a Sunday night, it would have been terrific.

“It wasn’t to be, and when you’re playing against these teams, you really need your crowd to give you a lift. We’re unique here, and it would have been a marvelous occasion.

“It’s not the case, and supporters or no supporters, we were too passive in our first-half approach. We were better in the second half and made it a cup tie, and it would have been interesting if we had taken that big chance (from Gayle), which you have to take when you play against these big teams.”

It just wasn’t meant to be once again. Now it’s on to another big match at Bournemouth, who like Aston Villa last Wednesday, are in a fight for their Premier League lives.

On a positive note, Steve Bruce has confirmed that local lad Mark Gillespie will join Newcastle this summer as a free agent.

“I think it’s been signed in the last 24 hours. We’re delighted to have him on board. He was here as a youngster, went away and played some games, and we welcome him back.”

What happened last night is that Bruce watched our games against Man City in the last two seasons and with the backing of the players tried to replicate it. With a crowd behind us, Gayle and Schar not having their moments it might have come off, it didn’t. Let’s be rooting honest here, after two draws with league one opposition and hanging on by a thread against an under strength championship side, we were lucky to make it as far as we did anyway. Let’s please put a stop to this nonsense that Bruce deserves to be in charge of a new era at the club.

I am so dissappointed in Gayles effort, not that it would of necessarily changed the result, but he was regularly putting in those types of chances at WBA last season. May be it is the lack of match practice, I would definitely give him more playing time, however apart from the Championship season this has been the definition of his nufc career.

Benfica are reportedly interested in appointing former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager. The 48-year-old has been out of work since last November. (Record – in Portuguese)

Effectively the delay in the takeover/fakeover has potentially reduced our chances of hiring one of the favourites for the managers role.

Can I start this post by saying I despise Ashley for what he has done to nufc and want him gone like everybody else.
However I find it laughable when people claim he is using nufc money to prop up Sports Direct. Firstly Sports Direct or Fraser Group are a massive company compared to nufc with much deeper pockets than we have and also no matter how much you massaged the accounts you couldn’t hide, that big, a money transfer.
What Ashley does do is use nufc as a free vehicle to advertise SD worldwide and line his own pockets with revenue streams such as the catering, repaying his loan, nufc shop and trademark rights to nufc logos (and probably other ways I’m not aware of).
However to say things like he has used the transfer budget to buy HOF is just ridiculous!

Someone mentioned that Shearer wasn’t as annoyed as you would expect and that could be an indicator he knows something is in the offing.

    Food for thought

I checked Maguires figures last night and the clubs net spend on players in the Ashley era is just over £100M , which isn’t great for a club our size.
I’m fairly sure when Ashley got huge money for Carroll for zero outlay he thought he’d discovered Eldorado but the dope didn’t even invest in the infrastructure that produced AC.
His ideal was a club just bobbing along in the PL raking in money for producing young stars and he couldn’t even do that properly.

Jib and Martoon, good points. The blog will be fun for the next while as people try to out shout each other about how fat Ashley is etc. What I find remarkable is that the dross churned out first half yesterday was carbon copy of the time we played City when jonjo kicked the ball to the goalie and everyone retreated and we didn’t want the ball. But that was OK because rafa did it. Strange. Of course it wud have been better if we had got after city, but if we did that and went 2 down in 15 mins, people here wud be saying “why did he not copy benitez”.

And Ledge if u think that’s the worst u have been in 28 years, I suggest you cast your mind back to charva or the relegation scramble with Pardew or Wise or renaming the ground.

Its ugly but that was a 1/4 final free hit against one of the best teams in Europe and the most attacking team in premiership history.

If you can get past the sentimental drivel in the first few paragraphs, there’s a canny article by Liam Kennedy of the Shields Gazette out there.
“All that is required is the transfer of funds, once the Premier League work out a legal framework by which their product – the actual game – can be shown in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”

This is what is causing the delay imo.

I find this obsession with Rafa disturbing , he did well with the tools at his disposal and 90% of the fans backed him ( if you went to games you would know this), when almiron came in we changed to a more attacking formation and did well for the rest of season – we them spent 80 million on ‘better’ players including breaking our club record and taking in a bunch of loan players on high wages – we’ve gone backwards instead of forwards … I’m not blaming Bruce for signings as I think he has very little input , the club is rotten to the core under Ashley and unless we get taken over nothing will change
Do I think Bruce deserves a chance under new owners .. definitely not , I’ve seen nothing to indicate any improvement anywhere since he came in , do I want Rafa back, no – we need to move forward not backwards
