There is a promising report in the Express today that cites Italian website TuttoUdinese’s claim that Newcastle have matched Udinese’s contract offer to Matty Longstaff.
According to the report, Udinese no longer have an interest in the 20-year-old due to Newcastle’s surging efforts to resign the local lad. We’re not quite sure why Udinese would suddenly drop their interest, but hopefully, the claim that Newcastle have upped their offer is accurate.
Newcastle appear to be moving forward with their summer business despite the pending takeover. You can’t really blame them as they don’t want to be left behind should the takeover get nixed by the Premier League.
Yesterday, Steve Bruce confirmed that local lad Mark Gillespie will be returning to Newcastle this summer. The goalkeeper was a free agent after a two-year spell in Scotland with Motherwell.
Last week it was announced that Andy Carroll and Javier Manquillo had signed extensions, with Javier’s being a new four-year contract. Both players were on contracts set to expire at the end of this campaign.
Hopefully, there’s something in this recent claim about Matty Longstaff. Steve Bruce has been pushing the midfielder to stay at Newcastle despite the interest from abroad.
This is what Bruce recently had to say about Matty’s situation:
“The ball is in Matty’s hands,” said Newcastle head coach Bruce.
“I’ve gone public with it; I think we’ve made him a wonderful offer and for me, it should be his way forward in his career.
“Being a Newcastle lad and having the season he’s just had, it’s his way forward.
“Of course we would all love him to stay but, as young as he is, it’s his prerogative.
“If players want to run down their contract there’s not much we can do as a club.
“We’ve done everything we possibly can. The rest is up to Matty, it’s for him to decide.”
If Matty does decide to stay a Magpie, then that’ll be three players sorted for next season. We’ll have the makings of a decent squad that can be significantly enhanced with three or four top signings this summer if this takeover gets approved once and for all.

Comment #48I actually think Sean looks a million times better in a 3 man midfield. He doesn’t have the pace to play as a 2. But if he is the furthest forward with Shelvey and Hayden behind he looks better. He has some quality on the ball.
2 man midfield and he seems to be a ghost in the game.

Comment #53Is it a coincidence that Sean L was worth 30M at the start of the season, a year under Bruce and we’d be lucky to get 10M. Would Perez have sold for 30M had Bruce took over a season earlier. Have our players value increased or decreased after a year under Bruce?

Comment #59@hibbit: I think he’s tired. Never seems to know when to stop running, so he just does himself in.
Could also be the lack of fans tbf. It is bloody weird watching a match in an empty stadium, and it must have an impact on the players.

I think Jail was asking if he would’ve been valued at less than £30m, rather than more. If the release clause was £30m nobody was going to pay above that, but if his form declined sharply under Bruce he could very easily have ended up with a lower pricetag. Make sense?

No mate, not a journalist. I studied it at degree level but quickly realised the industry is full of liars who will do anything to sell copy and spread propaganda so decided it wasn’t for me.

It’s a nice idea and good to see it getting sone support. Sadly mate no amount of petitions are likely to make any odds here. Petitions are basically exclusively used for the purpose of having issues raised in parliament, and unless the idea is to have the law changed to put a time limit on takeovers, there isn’t really any chance of a “win” out of this. That doesn’t appear to be what this petition is calling for in the first place, and MPs are under no obligation to approve a petition simply because it reaches the 100,000 signatures required to trigger it being raised.
Nice idea, but it won’t help.
